SuperSpeed USB 3.0 for Fast Connections

Experience the transfer rates of the future with USB 3.0. By connecting to a compatible USB 3.0 device, such as an external drive, SuperSpeed USB 3.0 can offer up to 10 times faster transfer rates than today's Hi-Speed USB 2.0 standard. This means that files and folders that took hours to transfer now just take minutes, and you can move whole albums to and from your laptop in just a few seconds, saving you time and making your media much more portable.

Not only is USB 3.0 fast, it's also convenient. You'll still be able to connect and charge all your favourite USB 2.0 devices from your USB 3.0 port, such as your MP3 player or smartphone. With USB 3.0 you get the compatibility you need for today with the speed you'll need for tomorrow.

HDMI for HD Entertainment

The Toshiba Satellite C870 has an integrated HDMI port for added convenience and enhanced usability. Now you can connect your laptop to an external device and stream high definition content. When using HDMI, audio and visual content are streamed through a single cable, removing the need for multiple connections. Now you only need one cable, making connecting your laptop easier and tidier.

Integrated Web Camera

The Satellite C870 features an integrated 1.0 MP web camera. The camera and microphone let you see and hear your contacts online, and can take still pictures, video clips and audio notes. With Toshiba's integrated WebCam communication is made easy--network with friends and family from the comfort of your own home.

Multi-touch Functionality

The Satellite C870's touchpad features multi-touch gesture support, providing an innovative alternative to conventional scrolling and buttons. The touchpad features an advanced, touch-sensitive interface solution that senses the position of a finger or fingers on its surface and recognises pinching, swiping, and rotating motions performed by simply moving your fingers.

The multi-touch touchpad recognises six different finger gestures, including:

  • Pinch Gesture--two-finger pinch delivers zooming functionality in many Windows applications. The two-finger pinch zoom can be used to zoom in or out of photos, maps, or documents.
  • One or Two Finger Scrolling--scrolling delivers functionality in Windows applications by using one or two separate fingers in a horizontal or vertical motion anywhere on the touchpad, with the scrolling rate controlled by your finger speed.
  • Chiral Scrolling--whenever you wish to scroll just slide two fingers downwards (or upwards) and then you can move your fingers in clockwise or anticlockwise motion to continue scrolling.
  • Momentum Motion--delivers smooth, fast, trackball-like cursor motion. A quick flick of one finger across the touchpad surface can move the cursor across the entire screen and is ideal for use with computer gaming applications.
  • Rotation--rotate photos and other items in 90-degree increments by placing two separated fingers on the touchpad and moving them around in a continuous clockwise or counter-clockwise circular motion.
DVD SuperMulti Drive

View all your movies, use your laptop as a multi-purpose entertainment system and create your own CDs and DVDs with the built-in DVD SuperMulti drive.

3.0 out of 5 stars Broken Windows and empty hallways 5 Mar 2013
Verified Purchase
First of all, this appears to be a nice laptop but it doesn't feel particularly well built. The keyboard feels cheap and on mine at least, has a slight bump or raised part in the centre. It actually feels like a child's toy typewriter. I'm not sure how well it will last with lots of typing, my guess would be not very long.

I was pleasantly surprised by the weight of the machine. Many reviewers have suggested it is very heavy indeed but perhaps because I am used to an ancient Sony Vaio that is really heavy I find this one light as a feather.

Returning to the rather flimsy build quality. The machine flexes disconcertingly when lifted or the cover is closed but then again, I am used to the solidity of the Sony. I would have to say that it would be quite unsuitable for child or teenager because I reckon it would fall apart quite quickly.

Performance? At the moment it's difficult to say because quite simply, I regard Windows 8 as an abomination and quite unfit for purpose. To begin with,it is not simple a case of switching on and getting going. No, Microsoft put you through a maze of bizarre processes just to get you are far as the start screen. It is question after question and you have to sign up to their weird registration which involves endless dead ends. Clearly they are data mining in order to collect as much info about you as possible. Just be careful you make sure all the info is correct otherwise you'll be left in a nether world, contemplating a reinstall.

Now I know this review should be about the machine itself but as the operating system is inextricably linked to it, it must be discussed. I have been using Windows since the days of 3.11 through to 7 (missed out Vista).

4.0 out of 5 stars Good value laptop 22 Dec 2012
Vine Customer Review of Free Product (What's this?)
First impressions of this laptop are pretty good. For the price, it has a nice, big screen. It seems difficult, sometimes, to find a decent laptop at around this price which has a screen of this size. So that's good start. Plus, larger screen means larger keyboard (which means numeric keypad. Hurrah! Though it also means higher power consumption, which isn't so good for battery life).

Construction is solid enough, though it is plastic and has that plasticky kind of feel. The keyboard is functional enough, though I have used some of the Toshiba laptops higher up in their range and this aspect can be nicer. Still, it's fine. Good thing about it being plastic is that the laptop is remarkably light. This is certainly welcome.

This is a review of the whole package, so I will talk briefly about Windows 8. I had used it briefly before, when setting up a new laptop at my Mother's house (funnily enough, another Toshiba). At the time I wasn't totally convinced by it. Which is a shame as I think it is genuinely quite well designed. The new smart screen idea is interesting, but I don't think particularly relevant to desktops or laptops. I *still* want to swipe the screen! Still, does suggest this OS will be excellent on touchscreen 'phones and tablets. The other problem is, I have been finding things a little bit temperamental. For example, I'll click one of the links on the start screen, then with a careless touch of the trackpad, I'll be straight back there. Bit frustrating. Reckon I'll stick with Windows 7 on my desktop for now.

Set up is easy enough. Mind you, it is an endless source of annoyance for me that laptops routinely ship with a load of nonsense pre-installed. I'll choose the applications I want to use, thank you!

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Value 2 Jan 2013
Vine Customer Review of Free Product (What's this?)
You're getting a 17" screen at a bargain price, but to keep the price down Toshiba only give you 4GB RAM, but the upside is that you get USB3 and a very nice screen indeed. You also get a decent 500GB HDD, which is enough for a fairly large photo/music collection

My first impression on opening the box was that the laptop was relatively light, given the size. When switched on for the first time, I definitely felt that the screen was brighter and clearer than I was used to.

Using it for the first time was pretty easy, and there's a shortcut on the desktop for you to back up the main operating files to external discs. I did that using the easy software provided and it took only 3 dvds.

Windows 8 came as a shock after the ease of Windows 7, and I must admit I downloaded the so-called Classic Screen with the Start button so that I could stick with that. Except for the start screen and the whole App thing, the new OS does seem faster with a few neat improvements or tweaks. It also has IE10, which again takes a bit of getting used to.

The laptop comes with McAfee and a trial version of Office 2010. I uninstalled these straight away, as I prefer other antivirus software and already have Office on disk, which I installed quickly.

As for speed, it's perfectly adequate for most home office tasks. I've used excel extensively on it and have no issues to report regarding lag times. Also, I've been using photo editing software and haven't noticed any problems there either. This is no gaming machine, but it doesn't claim to be.

Battery life also seems relatively good, noticeably more than I'm used to, so that's nice to have as well.

I think you need USB 3.
