Easy to Use

Toshiba laptops come with a range of features and connectivity options that enhance your user experience. Toshiba laptops feature a full range of connectivity options, including an SD card reader, USB 2.0/3.0 ports, and a HDMI slot so you can connect to your HDTV.

SuperSpeed USB 3.0 for Fast Connections

Experience the transfer rates of the future with USB 3.0. By connecting to a compatible USB 3.0 device, such as an external drive, SuperSpeed USB 3.0 can offer up to 10 times faster transfer rates than today's Hi-Speed USB 2.0 standard. This means that files and folders that took hours to transfer now just take minutes, and you can move whole albums to and from your laptop in just a few seconds, saving you time and making your media much more portable. Just imagine - now you can move a feature-length movie to a portable drive in just a few minutes, ready to take to a friend's house and watch on the big screen.

Not only is USB 3.0 fast, it's also convenient. You'll still be able to connect and charge all your favourite USB 2.0 devices from your USB 3.0 port, such as your MP3 player or smartphone. With USB 3.0 you get the compatibility you need for today with the speed you'll need for tomorrow.

Wireless Sharing is Easy with Bluetooth 4.0

This laptop includes Bluetooth 4.0 which allows you to connect and share files wirelessly over short distances. This makes it ideal for connecting to compatible mobile devices such as smartphones, MP3 players, and more. You can also use Bluetooth to connect to wireless peripherals, such as headsets, speakers, mice and keyboard, making it easier to use your laptop on the move or at home without the clutter of connecting wires.

HDMI for HD Entertainment

The Toshiba Satellite C855 has an integrated HDMI port for added convenience and enhanced usability. Now you can connect your laptop to an external device and stream high definition content. When using HDMI, audio and visual content are streamed through a single cable, removing the need for multiple connections. Now you only need one cable, making connecting your laptop easier and tidier.

Integrated Web Camera

The Satellite C855 features an integrated 1.0 MP web camera with Toshiba Face Recognition. The camera and microphone let you see and hear your contacts online, and can take still pictures, video clips and audio notes. With Toshiba's integrated WebCam communication is made easy--network with friends and family from the comfort of your own home.

Toshiba Face Recognition

Using numerous passwords can complicate things so instead of worrying about remembering all of these or using a single password that can be compromised the Satellite C855 features Toshiba Face Recognition--the fun and easy way to log on to your laptop. Toshiba Face Recognition is a biometric-based identification method and uses the WebCam to automatically detect 14 separate facial feature points to verify your identity and grant you fast and simple access to your data. Once your facial profile has been saved it can be used to access the system. Additional users can store their own unique facial recognition profile, allowing your whole family to use the computer conveniently.

Multi-touch Functionality

The Satellite C855's touchpad features multi-touch gesture support, providing an innovative alternative to conventional scrolling and buttons. The touchpad features an advanced, touch-sensitive interface solution that senses the position of a finger or fingers on its surface and recognises pinching, swiping, and rotating motions performed by simply moving your fingers.

Toshiba Multi-touch Touchpad
Take control with the multi-touch gesture touchpad.

The multi-touch touchpad recognises six different finger gestures, including:

  • Pinch Gesture--two-finger pinch delivers zooming functionality in many Windows applications. The two-finger pinch zoom can be used to zoom in or out of photos, maps, or documents.
  • One or Two Finger Scrolling--scrolling delivers functionality in Windows applications by using one or two separate fingers in a horizontal or vertical motion anywhere on the touchpad, with the scrolling rate controlled by your finger speed.
  • Chiral Scrolling--whenever you wish to scroll just slide two fingers downwards (or upwards) and then you can move your fingers in clockwise or anticlockwise motion to continue scrolling.
  • Momentum Motion--delivers smooth, fast, trackball-like cursor motion. A quick flick of one finger across the touchpad surface can move the cursor across the entire screen and is ideal for use with computer gaming applications.
  • Rotation--rotate photos and other items in 90-degree increments by placing two separated fingers on the touchpad and moving them around in a continuous clockwise or counter-clockwise circular motion.
DVD SuperMulti Drive

View all your movies, use your laptop as a multi-purpose entertainment system and create your own CDs and DVDs with the built-in DVD SuperMulti drive. Not only does it provide great viewing, but the integrated speakers also offer optimum sound quality-perfect for when watching all your favourite movies.

Software Essentials

You’ll get everything you need to get moving straight away. Microsoft Office Starter 2010 is pre-installed whilst the McAfee Internet Security free trial instantly detects and blocks viruses, including stopping web threats before they are downloaded to your PC. Skype is also included for face to face video calls and phone calls to both other Skype users and ordinary phones.

The processor is great, and combined with the 6GB RAM everything runs very smoothly and quickly. The screen is wonderful: despite the large size, the battery can keep it going for 5 hours easily. The eco mode makes the battery even more long lasting. The keyboard is well designed, though the casing that stops crums falling between the keys feels a little flimsy (Though it does do its job well) Aesthetically, it looks great, and it looks quite sleek.

Graphically it is beautiful. Videos look good, and I've been able to play several relatively new games with no problems at all.
The sound is decent quality.

The downsides are few (That I've found so far). The section in front of the keyboard with the touch pad is textured - it has tiny gridwork - which catches dust and other little particles.

All in all, this is a great laptop for a good price, and well worth your consideration.

I bought this laptop at the end of August and am absolutely delighted with my choice, I'm no expert with specifications, so I read the reviews and made my own mind up, I found it easy to set up considering I have never done it before. I don't sit getting stressed now because of slow processing, things move a lot faster. The one I had previously was an old one loaned to me (running Vista) so this one is a dream. I don't use it for games though, I mainly use it for DTP and find it runs very smoothly. I would certainly recommend it.

Think I cover most of it in the vid. Excellent spec for the price - at the time I bought it, probably pound for pound the best value going. It does look good, the only compromise is if you're being really picky the build quality isn't what you get if you pay more, and it comes with a bit of bloat software. If you know what you're doing though knocking all that guff off is a short job. Great value.

I have a couple of PCs, set up in the back of my garage - after last winter I decided I wanted to work in the warm lounge! It has taken me a couple of days to get into the machine and I have set it up with mains transfers from my SKY router which is my bedroom now, that's where the main telephone line is situated..... My brain finally got into gear as I already had a set of 3 TP Link mains transmitters so I reversed my original set up. The main unit with the Router in the bedroom, and another to my TV and the other back out to my garage internet PC. No wires (well hardly any)

Although I am nearly 80 my main use is for video editing and production, I have been a pro for 25 years but now semi-retired. The laptop was a bit of a gamble as I wasn't sure I could edit HD AVCHD on an i5 laptop. I can, and that's a relief. I bought a couple of cheap editing programmes to augment the £600 plus stuff on my specialist Raid PC. So, simple jobs in the lounge and complex stuff out in the garage.

The laptop has handled everything I have tried with ease. It is quick and easy to understand, I had bought a wireless mouse from Amazon and that made life easy when I set that up - these pad things are pretty useless for someone who uses a mouse extensively. Exceptions were a couple of programmes that will not work with Windows 7. For convenience, I have ordered a larger Data transfer card and a large External USB 3 hard drive - from Amazon of course. You can't have too much memory....

Overall fairly happy to date. Although keyboard is a bit flimsy and very small arrow keys etc. Performance up to now feels good.

I couldn't seem to find the Face Recognition application which it advertises having but I found it on the toshiba website and it seems to work.

But the worst part about this laptop up til now is the speakers, they got a terrible tinny sound to them, I have tried adjusting the equaliser but still bad. They should not be like this especially as they are advertising it as HD sound or whatever its called. My last laptop Dell vostro 1000 which is approx 5 yrs old has fantastic speakers compared to this.

Vine Customer Review of Free Product ( What's this? )
For the money this is a very nice laptop indeed. To begin with it is quite a sleek and attractive (I have the grey/silver version) and feels solidly put together. The screen is clear and bright and whether using office applications or watching DVDs it performs well (good contrast, reasonable 'blacks' for films etc). The individually tiled keyboard is pleasant to use and benefits from a full, separate numeric keypad (which is pretty much essential if you use applications like Excel a lot for example). The trackpad is responsive and accurate and can also work similarly to an Ipad/capacitive tablet where you can `pinch' to enlarge or reduce the image etc.

Sound-wise I would rate the in-built stereo speakers as OK but nothing remarkable (but then I have yet to hear a laptop that can produce truly impressive sound from such small units). That being said if you use a pair of earphones (or in my case a pair of Creative EP-630 earbuds) then the sound is truly transformed: probably near or equal the audio quality of my MP3 player and Ipod. Presumably this is in part due to the 'SRS Premium Sound HD' software that tailors the listening experience to the type of media you're listening to. It actually works very well too and is easy to navigate as it auto-detects whether you're using earphones or the Toshiba's speakers leaving you to just choose whether you are listening to music, watching a film or playing a game.(NB: If you do intend to listen to a lot of audio externally I would highly recommend you invest in a small
