I bought this Toshiba model after my Acer laptop broke down after only 2 years of casual use. Encouraged by my mother's older Toshiba Satellite model, which has served her for years with no problems whatsoever, I decided to buy the newer model for myself, which had a vast improvement on specs. I have to say that this computer, for the price it's being sold, is near faultless. It does everything I wanted it to do in regards of schoolwork, and it also runs computer games incredibly well. Connection to the internet is smooth and unproblematic, and you are given a free month subscription to McAfee Internet Security to get you going. Tutorial is easy to swallow, and there are plenty of games and apps to keep you interested.

However, the one fault I have found with this computer sadly, is Windows 8. After setting up the computer with no problems, I was thrust into a screen where icons and apps were littered all over the screen, making it feel like a disorganized mess. No tutorial was offered on how to navigate the computer's functions here, and once I finally found the desktop icon, it returned me to the Windows 7 setup which I was a lot more comfortable with.
Barring the fact that there is no longer a Start button either, but moving on...
All in all, I give this computer a 4/5. Everything about it is perfect for my needs, with the exception of the newly installed Windows 8, which has left me so confused on its functions that I still haven't fully explored my computers capabilities. Regardless, a wonderful bargain for the price offered.

I am a student who is dependent on his laptop for work but don't often does not have sufficient funds. So when my previous laptop was getting old I searched for a cheap and good laptop finding the Toshiba Satellite C850 which was exactly what I was looking for.

Pro

-Good battery life.
-Surprisingly light compared to the size.
-Nice feel of the keyboard (including numberpad).
-Built in bluetooth

Con

-Windows 8 (an OS for touchscreens)

Overall I am happy with this device and I hope this comment has helped.

This computer seems to be a very versatile machine, but, I am still getting used to Windows 8 (I think I prefer Windows 7), this is not a fault of the computer. I shall continue trying to use Win 8 for a while, but may investigate deleting it and replacing it with Win 7.

This is a good laptop but not perfect, it generally runs pretty well, for this reason I have give it a 4 star rating. The laptop has good specifications and it was labelled at a reasonable price so that is the reason for purchase. The performance is good but could be faster. Unfortunately Toshiba the manufacturer decided to put a whole lot of bloatware on the laptop along with the Windows 8 operating system which we have since removed. I have removed alot of unnecessary stuff from the laptop and tweaked and optimized it for top performance. It lags a bit when gaming which is the main use of the laptop but it is better than the previous laptop. As others have said, the keyboard is not the best and the CD drive is not in a great place but overall it is fine for everyday use. If you are looking for a laptop for heavy gaming or other heavy use then look elsewhere. There are only 2 USB ports, which is not really enough, 3 is a minimum for me, once you have a mouse plugged in and one USB drive there's no more ports. Graphics are good, good sized hard drive; more than you would ever need at 500GB although there seems to be about 30GB of unaccountable space, good 4GB of RAM which is expandable up to 16GB which is exceptional, so maybe a possible upgrade in future. That's about all I have to say about the laptop. Generally a pretty good laptop. Recommended? Yes if you are not a heavy user. I would recommend PCs all day for heavy usage. Laptop performance will never match that of a PC.

I ordered three of this type from a supplier (not through Amazon), one was DOA, another one died within 2 months.

This has to be the most hateful laptop I've ever come across in my 25 years of IT experience. I really didn't pay much, they were really cheap and you can feel it everywhere: the keyboard wasn't even straight when new but bulges in the middle on all five laptops (3 plus 2 replacements), it also flexes horribly when typing on it, not to mention the rattling from underneath, the too little a space between keys and the sometimes not recognised keyed in letters.
Then try to open the CD tray: the button is so well designed that you have to lift up the computer in order to touch it (as it isn't proud of the surface you won't find it anyway). And I haven't got large fingers.
The touchpad must also be the worst you can imagine. It stops working every so often, you then need to wait for up to two minutes until it starts working again. Best is to buy a mouse.
The screen might be useable but it's of the cheapest type, every vertical shift or change of viewing angle leads to a change of contrast, especially when viewed more from the top.
The computer is also horribly slow, even with a fresh Windows 8 install.

The battery isn't too bad though, you can easily manage 3 hours on full power or even more with less usage.

This thing is cheap, cheap, cheap and it shouts that from any nook and cranny! Better pay a bit more and get something at least half decent or even better: buy a used 1 or 2 year old business laptop of a brand which is renowned for its quality like Lenovo or maybe Dell. This crap tells me one thing: never ever will I buy Toshiba again or will recommend one to anybody but my biggest enemies (I don't have any as far as I know).
