5.0 out of 5 stars Toshiba SD5010 15 Aug 2010
Verified Purchase
I purchased this to allow me to play video files direct, to save having to convert them to DVD. After reading some reviews I was a little worried that I made a mistake, as the review and the documentation said that it would only accept a 4Gb USB flash drive and that the largest file it would play was 1Gb. I can confirm that this is out of date information, as I connected my 125Gb USB disk drive and played larger than IGb files without difficulty. However it is important that the drive is formatted FAT32 as my other USB drive formatted NTFS wouldn't play, but once reformatted FAT32, everything was fine.

The video quality is excellent, you can really see the difference between this and my old Sony DVD recorder. All in all a great purchase.

5.0 out of 5 stars Perfect purchase 8 Dec 2010
I purchased this after my previous DVD player sadly died. I chose this as I wanted to get the HD quality without having to upgrade my whole dvd collection for Bluray. I also wanted a player that would allow me to play video files.

This does all of that and is very nice to look at too. I've managed to watch various .avi files on this player no problem. Yes the menus aren't top quality but its a small price to pay for the quality of the product.

Very happy with my purchase and would definitely recommend this for people looking to upgrade their dvd player.

5.0 out of 5 stars Toshiba SD5010 12 Sep 2011

Having read all the reviews on here and other websites, I was worried that the blacks wouldn't be black. Or that it doesn't make me coffee in the morning. Ok maybe not the last one ;)

I have so far found the DVD player does everything it says on the box, it plays DVDs though scart and HDMI... It also plays divX avi's from dvd's cd's and via usb. It will reliably read from any media that formatted to fat32 (not NTFS... So what!) I have tried it with external hard disks, usb pen (2,4,8, and 16gb) All work provided you format them correctly to fat32.

The picture quality is excellent. I am no WhatHifi reviewer... However as an ordinary consumer I have no complaints about the hardware at this price. It is excellent. If you want better picture quality buy a blueray player.

Hope this has been helpful.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent DVD player for the price. 19 Aug 2010
Verified Purchase
For the price it's a real bargain and unlike so many devices with a remote control this remote actually works well and is very responsive even from quite a distance and angle, I mention this first because it's a real pet hate of mine as so many remotes I've had are barely usable unless your a few feet away and standing right in front the machine!

Compared to some other DVD players I've had this one loads discs quite quickly and plays all the CD-R/DVD-R's I've tried with no problems, it has the Toshiba REGZA system which means you can control the DVD player using a REGZA compatible Toshiba TV remote and that's one reason I bought this player as I have a Toshiba flat screen and the TV's remote does indeed operate the player quite well.

As another reviewer rightly stated the information in the handbook about what media via the USB port can be played is incorrect or maybe just out of date as I have found that just about all formats that can be played on disc can also be played via the USB port when using a USB memory stick or also a USB card reader and SD memory card including SDHC cards, I've used a 16GB SDHC card plugged into a USB card reader and the player finds it and reads it perfectly well, so if you don't have a USB port on your TV or if like my TV the USB port will only handle jpeg pictures and not video you can via the USB port on the player watch video from memory cards plugged into a USB card reader or a USB memory stick.

I can't think of any reason why anyone would be disappointed with this player and have to give it 5 stars.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent value DVD player 21 Feb 2011
Toshiba's SD5010 upscaling DVD player is of excellent quality and is extremely lightweight, ideal as a second DVD player for the bedroom.
Now there's very little point in buying an upscaling player if you don't intend to use it via HDMI, setting this machine to output 1080p does indeed bring new life and picture quality to your existing DVD collection.
Surprisingly so for a budget player the USB port is handy for playing back multimedia files from say a USB stick. It's not a "jack of all trades port" though as it will only play certain formats, but the mere fact Toshiba have included it is credit to them.
One final thing, the unit looks great in shiny gloss black but attracts dust very easily, so be prepared to run that feather duster over it often!
Overall, this an excellent budget player, if you don't want to fork out the extra for a Blu Ray Player then this is the next best thing.

3.0 out of 5 stars Toshiba SD5010 dvd player 3 Oct 2010
By Anon
Overall this is a good dvd player but if you are considering this for Xvid/Dvix use, DON'T. This player does not play these files very well. It seems to be buggy on some of the files that I tried to play, despite them being 25 fps and mono mp3 and or AC3. Tried a number of conversions but failes to play. Some play well but some don't despite being technically similar. Player switches off while trying to play some Xvid/Divx files or just locks up! in my view, Toshiba needs to update the firmware.

Avoid if you want this for Xvids/Divx.
