Was looking for a DVD player to replace a nasty cheapo Tesco one that refused to play burnt DVD's, ended up buying this Tosh SD270 and i have to say its a great little player.

As i haven't yet succumbed to the "posh telly" influences on the high street the lack of HDMI port didn't affect my decision, it has component connections if and when i do require something to upscale to 720p/1080i (don't worry, i don't really understand that last bit either)

To get this machine to perform as a multi region player simply follow the following instructions

The Hack Procedure:
- Power On
- Open Tray
- Press 9879 0 (0 stands for Multiregion, you may press buttons 1 to 6 to choose a specific region)
- A Message appears stating that "The Reg.No was changed to: [insert whatever region (0-6) you selected here]"

That's all, now you can watch every DVD you please... :)

All in all, for £33 ish delivered within 3 days, i refuse to grumble, it looks nice, has played everything i've tried including some DivX stuff burnt straight from my PC, and all in all i'm a very happy bunny

Now if someone could help me find a 32" LCD for around £100 i'll be even happier

Doc.

Purchased from Amazon on Sunday, arrived on Wednesday, no delivery charge, all for £27. I purchased the SD-270E because my long-serving SD-340E player developed intermittent freezing problems so I was looking for a cheap no-nonsence replacement. Set-up is litterally plug and play and the multiregion hack worked without any difficulty, which is as follows:
The Hack Procedure:
- Power On
- Open Tray
- Press 9879 0 (0 stands for Multiregion, you may press buttons 1 to 6 to choose a specific region)
- A Message appears stating that "The Reg.No was changed to: [insert whatever region (0-6) you selected here]"
I have an old 36 inch Toshiba CRT Dolby TV so I just connected the Scart and Digital Coaxial leads and have decent quality at an affordable price. The machine is quiet when running and plays any format that I would use that is until blueray and HD Format DVD players become more widely used.

WOW!

I couldn't rate this sleek little player highly enough.

No USB input - No problem!:

Compared to the Philips DVP5160 player, this unit does lack a USB/Flash media interface. Handy I thought, but for your extra £15, is it really worth it?

Considering it DOES use DVD-RW (rewritable), which at ~25p each are a cheaper option than Flash media, I was wrong to be hesitant at not having the USB interface, and haven't looked back. Why pay more?

DivX (6) Playback:

DIVX Playback is phenomenal! - Does exactly what it says on the box. It even worked with other Mpeg4 based AVI files I used, such as one compressed with XVid.

Obviously the playback is only as good as the file you provide, so if you have a tiny DivX movie - you only get out what you put in.

TV Picture:

Razor sharp, nice and stable, no flicker. Even though it's not HDMI, the picture quality is noticably better than my previous player.

Besides, with most DVDs only at 720 pixels wide... your widescreen TV isn't going to benefit much from a HDMI DVD player. So why fork out the extra?

Sound Quality:

The 3D effect is much better than my previous model, and although the sound is only Stereo it's crystal clear, and MP3/WMA playback is superb.

JPEG (Picture) Viewer:

Does what it says on the tin. Still... where this player is better than many is in the razor sharp still images, which benefit from the crystal clear and stable video output. You can also zoom in and out... which is nice for larger images.

Build Quailty:

This unit is stylish, has the ususal Toshiba quality even at the bargain price it was listed at when I bought it.

The only thing it's missing is 5.1 output, but if you, like me don't need that, you couldn't ask for a better player.

A more stylish, perhaps thinner and black, remote would have been nice, however the one provided (cream) has all the features you need.

Phono cables are provided, and most TVs have these. However there is one SCART output socket on the back.

Final:

Considering you can pack a good 6 full movies onto one DVD in DivX format at more than acceptable quality, and the amount of media available is growing all the time... you can't justify missing out on the features and quality this little unit packs in.

Well done Toshiba!

Well done Amazon! You beat the high-street into the dirt yet again with a whopping saving of 22%, coupled with free delivery - this is why I shop on Amazon. How do you do it?

Great for 'non-standard' file-formats
It's not the greatest machine in the world, but this is a good bargain if you want to view videos in 'non-standard' file-formats such as .avi
