Sleep n' charge USB
There is no need to carry around multiple charging accessories when you have your NB550D. With a Sleep n' charge USB port you can charge your mobile phone, MP3 player and other digital gadgets even while your laptop is switched off--now you can charge your gadgets overnight and wake up to a fully-charged battery.
Integrated web camera
The camera and microphone let you see and hear your contacts online, and can take still pictures, video clips and audio notes. With Toshiba's integrated webcam communication is made easy--network with friends and family from the comfort of your own home.
Harman Kardon Speakers and Dolby Advanced Audio
The NB550D is equipped with integrated premium branded Harman Kardon speakers, reproducing your music in rich, high quality stereo. The sound is delivered across the speakers, creating a life-like audio experience. The premium quality allows you to enjoy your music and movies in parallel with high definition picture quality, ensuring an enjoyable entertainment experience.
The NB550D also features Dolby Advanced Audio which upgrades the audio capabilities of your laptop to deliver a more natural sound experience. Dolby Advanced Audio uses the same optimisation techniques that go into tuning movie theatres and mixing rooms and improves the playback quality of compressed digital content (such as MP3 or WMA files). Dolby Advanced Audio does this by analysing audio signals and works to restore high-frequency sounds often lost in encoding. At the same time, it also works on low-end sounds and returns the effects so they can be heard with all their original impact. The result is detailed sound quality with booming bass and with higher highs, and works with audio outputs including the in-built Harman Kardon speakers, headphones, and line-out.
With the NB550D packing seriously impressive speakers, it seems a shame to let them go to waste while your machine’s in sleep mode or even switched off. With our new USB Sleep-and-Music technology you don’t have to. It can take advantage of the Harman Kardon speakers even when your PC’s powered off.
USB Sleep-and-Music effectively turns your Toshiba laptop into a set of separate speakers. Hook up your MP3 player into the microphone jack and you’ll be able to make use of the more powerful woofers and tweeters inside. Sat out on the patio or away in a hotel, you’ll have a sound system to hand for when headphones just don’t do the songs justice.
It’s also a perfect feature for parties. With USB Sleep-and-Music, you can switch between music collections in an instant. Everyone can take their turn as DJ by hooking up their MP3 player, and when it’s your turn to play tunes you can fire up your PC and tap into its own MP3 library in a jiffy.
USB Sleep-and-Music is smart thinking in practice. It means you’ve always got speakers to hand to really crank up the volume, but you’re not hammering away at your laptop’s battery or lugging around extra weight by doing so. It brings a whole new dimension to the multimedia laptop--a music machine that’s never off duty.
Toshiba Media Controller
A new interface to make content streaming easy, Toshiba Media Controller software facilitates media sharing between connected multimedia devices. Media Controller allows you to stream videos, music and pictures from a media library to TVs, mini notebooks, smartphones or media players through a simple drag-and-drop interface. The system allows media sharing on networks under one single unified user interface through Windows 7's "play to" functionality and DLNA (Digital Living Network Alliance) which ensures interoperability of connected devices in a home multimedia network. Toshiba Media Controller makes multimedia file sharing a breeze. Easily display videos captured with a mobile phone via a network connection directly on a mini notebook and stream movies stored on a mini notebook to a large HD TV (requires DLNA-certified device) without knowledge about network configuration and with only a few clicks.
Connectivity at your fingertips
The Toshiba NB550D has an integrated HDMI port for added convenience and enhanced usability. Now you can connect your laptop to an external device and stream high definition content. When using HDMI, audio and visual content are streamed through a single cable, removing the need for multiple connections. Now you only need one cable, making connecting your laptop easier and tidier.
The NB550D's touchpad features multi-touch gesture support, providing an innovative alternative to conventional scrolling and buttons. The touchpad features an advanced, touch-sensitive interface solution that senses the position of a finger or fingers on its surface and recognises pinching, swiping, and rotating motions performed by simply moving your fingers.
The multi-touch touchpad recognises four different finger gestures:
- Pinch Gesture--two-finger pinch delivers zooming functionality in many Windows applications. The two-finger pinch zoom can be used to zoom in or out of photos, maps, or documents.
- Scrolling--two-finger and two-finger reverse scrolling delivers functionality in Windows applications by using two separate fingers in a horizontal or vertical motion anywhere on the touchpad, with the scrolling rate controlled by your finger speed.
- Momentum Motion--delivers smooth, fast, trackball-like cursor motion. A quick flick of one finger across the touchpad surface can move the cursor across the entire screen and is ideal for use with computer gaming applications.
- Rotation--rotate photos and other items in 90-degree increments by placing two separated fingers on the touchpad and moving them around in a continuous clockwise or counter-clockwise circular motion.
Connect to the Internet easily thanks to Toshiba's ConfigFree suite. ConfigFree features Wireless Radar which displays nearby active WiFi access points in a radar-like graphical interface. Draw a line from your computer to easily connect to WiFi access points. Connectivity Doctor analyses your network connection and assists in fixing problems, features easy diagnosis and repair of communication problems, and shows a detailed network. Profile Settings allows you to easily switch between network configurations and profiles can be created to capture the settings in different locations and switched automatically or semi-automatically. Finally, WiFi Protected Setup (WPS) features a push-button configuration setting to easily setup a secured connection between an access point/router and your mini notebook.
Toshiba Eco Utility
Save mini notebook power with Eco Utility, a power saving application designed by Toshiba to encourage better energy efficient usage. Accessed via the Windows taskbar, once activated you can monitor and begin saving power consumption immediately. A power consumption chart can be displayed to show the increase and decrease of power consumption when the Eco Mode is active. The utility is designed to offer a graphic view of consumption while using the mini notebook, as well as a historical record of consumption which can display both power consumption (displayed in WH) and CO2 emissions (displayed in kg). Eco Utility allows the user to work in a power-saving Eco Power Plan. Once Eco mode is activated, the system works accordingly to set Eco-friendly parameters, such as automatically dimming the display brightness, disabling LED and keyboard backlighting, and reducing the time before activating the hard drive sleep mode.

It loses one star for the laughable 1GB of memory that comes as standard in the single memory slot. It is even more of a joke, because the graphics processor snaffles 400MB at start up, leaving only 600MB for everything else. I immediately replaced the 1GB memory module with a Crucial Sodimm Laptop Memory Upgrade (4GB,204-pin,DDR3 PC3-10600,Cl=9,1.5v) from Amazon. This now costs just over £16, 2GB costs about £7 less. Windows 7 Starter edition can only address 2GB, but with 4GB installed, it gets a full 2GB, the graphics processor takes its 400MB allocation in addition to this. Although only 2.4GB of the 4GB is used, it gives a noticeable performance boost. The memory replacement is very straight forward. The only tool needed is a small cross point screw driver and there is even a "how to" video on Youtube. The whole operation took me less than 10 minutes. Others have also upgraded to 64 bit Windows 7 Home Premium to address the full 4GB of memory and get a more fully featured operating system. I did't think the extra features were worth the extra cost and hassle and didn't bother. However, if you have 4GB of memory installed, you will have this option.
The missus uses the netbook to play music, browse the internet, email, run office applications and play the standard Windows games. We have also connected it to the living room TV via the hdmi port to display her brother's Facebook album of holiday photos. In summary, a high-quality, nifty netbook but upgrade the memory or it will be painfully slow, if you run anything with even a modest appetite for memory.
Upgrade to 64bit Win7 (create a bootable win flash drive or external disk)
Upgrade to 4GB of Ram (£20 Amazon)
Use Driver Genius to get all the correct drivers for 64bit Windows, it'll find the names for you, then just google them or pay for the software, up to you!)
The only Toshiba software you'll need is the sleep utility, and webcam software, the rest is bloatware! Configfree by Toshiba is unnecessary but I happen to think its cool how you can reset your ip whenever you like and the radar is cool also!
I used O&O professional to rearrange all the files and defrag it to get the most out of the read speed of the harddisk.
To make the most of the speakers get SRS Audio Essentials Complete
I've had this laptop for a month, its a joy to use and the sound quality is excellent! Providing you do the following:
Upgrade to 64bit Win7 (Instructions to install win 7 through USB is on Youtube)
With the 64but OS you can upgrade to 4GB of Ram (cost £20 Amazon)
Use Driver Genius to get all the correct drivers for 64bit Windows (it'll give you the names, then find them yourself or pay for the software, up to you!) to make the most of the speakers get SRS Audio Essentials Complete, its better than the dolby HD enhancer
Windows Experience rating after upgrade
5.5 gaming graphics

upgrading the ram is a must! Most people are shocked at how well mine performs for a netbook! Well worth the effort in the end! If you're looking now, wait till January, computers sales are all false, new tech comes out and they get cheaper because companies are overstocked! My only complaint is that is doesn't have a slightly higher max res! The only work around are set the task bar to auto hide, connect to larger display or browse in full screen.
The Toshiba NB550D-10T netbook with the AMD C60 processor is FANTASTIC! I've upgraded the RAM to 2GB and uninstalled quite a bit of the Toshiba software but that's it...and that's how the little netbook will stay. Windows 7 Starter is fine for everything I will ever do with it....
So what you need to know - it is quick, quiet, runs for hours, sounds fantastic (both AVI's played through Windows Media Player and AAC/MP3 files through iTunes)and the screen is bright and crisp.
My 'other pc' is a Dell XPS 1330 which is now a few years old but was state of the art when purchased....this netbook feels as quick and was a quarter of the price...ahhh technology.
The only minor criticism (and it is very very minor) is the thick surround around the screen is a little bit ugly (shiny plastic) but I would still recommend this netbook to anyone.....and probably will :)
