I bought this netbook as a birthday present for the missus and she is delighted with it. Light weight, good build quality and very long battery life make it very portable. Graphics and audio are also of a high quality.
It loses one star for the laughable 1GB of memory that comes as standard in the single memory slot. It is even more of a joke, because the graphics processor snaffles 400MB at start up, leaving only 600MB for everything else. I immediately replaced the 1GB memory module with a Crucial Sodimm Laptop Memory Upgrade (4GB,204-pin,DDR3 PC3-10600,Cl=9,1.5v) from Amazon. This now costs just over £16, 2GB costs about £7 less. Windows 7 Starter edition can only address 2GB, but with 4GB installed, it gets a full 2GB, the graphics processor takes its 400MB allocation in addition to this. Although only 2.4GB of the 4GB is used, it gives a noticeable performance boost. The memory replacement is very straight forward. The only tool needed is a small cross point screw driver and there is even a "how to" video on Youtube. The whole operation took me less than 10 minutes. Others have also upgraded to 64 bit Windows 7 Home Premium to address the full 4GB of memory and get a more fully featured operating system. I did't think the extra features were worth the extra cost and hassle and didn't bother. However, if you have 4GB of memory installed, you will have this option.
The missus uses the netbook to play music, browse the internet, email, run office applications and play the standard Windows games. We have also connected it to the living room TV via the hdmi port to display her brother's Facebook album of holiday photos. In summary, a high-quality, nifty netbook but upgrade the memory or it will be painfully slow, if you run anything with even a modest appetite for memory.

I've had this laptop for a month, its a joy to use and the sound quality is excellent! Providing you do the following: Upgrade to 64bit Win7 (create a bootable win flash drive or external disk) Upgrade to 4GB of Ram (£20 Amazon) Use Driver Genius to get all the correct drivers for 64bit Windows, it'll find the names for you, then just google them or pay for the software, up to you!) The only Toshiba software you'll need is the sleep utility, and webcam software, the rest is bloatware! Configfree by Toshiba is unnecessary but I happen to think its cool how you can reset your ip whenever you like and the radar is cool also! I used O&O professional to rearrange all the files and defrag it to get the most out of the read speed of the harddisk. To make the most of the speakers get SRS Audio Essentials Complete

With the 64but OS you can upgrade to 4GB of Ram (cost £20 Amazon) Use Driver Genius to get all the correct drivers for 64bit Windows (it'll give you the names, then find them yourself or pay for the software, up to you!) to make the most of the speakers get SRS Audio Essentials Complete, its better than the dolby HD enhancer Windows Experience rating after upgrade 2.8 processer 4.9 ram 4.1 graphics 5.5 gaming graphics 5.8 hard disk upgrading the ram is a must! Most people are shocked at how well mine performs for a netbook! Well worth the effort in the end! If you're looking now, wait till January, computers sales are all false, new tech comes out and they get cheaper because companies are overstocked! My only complaint is that is doesn't have a slightly higher max res! The only work around are set the task bar to auto hide, connect to larger display or browse in full screen.
An excellent note book & good value for the money, pity about the Windows 7 starter edition which is rubbish! I upgraded to premium edition within 1/2 an hour of receipt the upgarde take about 20 mins or so and at the end will say the upgrade has FAILED switch off and restart it will now say Windos premium (I think its windows little joke at our expence) the memory could do with an upgrade too but again that is easily done, 2gb memory modules cost about £10 and can be fitted in 10 mins, read the instuctions with the memory undo 2 screws pop out the original 1 GB put the 2GB back in its place close up and switch on Done!!Speakers are brilliant with the Harmon Kardoman version all round good performer looks fantatic in Blue with he few tweeks performance is as good as it gets for the money, if it came with 2gb of memory I would have given it 5 stars Why ship with 1GB memory & windows starter, its a waste of time I know have had problems in the past with anti trust laws but i would rather see a machine with no OS and be able to chose what to use on purchase rather than the bundled rubbish.

This is the first time I've been compelled to write an online review.
The Toshiba NB550D-10T netbook with the AMD C60 processor is FANTASTIC! I've upgraded the RAM to 2GB and uninstalled quite a bit of the Toshiba software but that's it...and that's how the little netbook will stay. Windows 7 Starter is fine for everything I will ever do with it....
So what you need to know - it is quick, quiet, runs for hours, sounds fantastic (both AVI's played through Windows Media Player and AAC/MP3 files through iTunes)and the screen is bright and crisp.
My 'other pc' is a Dell XPS 1330 which is now a few years old but was state of the art when purchased....this netbook feels as quick and was a quarter of the price...ahhh technology.
The only minor criticism (and it is very very minor) is the thick surround around the screen is a little bit ugly (shiny plastic) but I would still recommend this netbook to anyone.....and probably will :)
