I write this having lost all my data over the weekend...

Word of warning - the "NTI Backup EZ Now" software will NOT help you if you decide to re-install Windows yourself.

Here's the problem. When you backup to the drive the NTI software creates a compressed file of its own format. To restore just the files and folders, you need the software on your newly-formatted computer. BUT when you install the software it AUTOMATICALLY STARTS A NEW BACKUP! So, your old files get over-written immediately, and the new installation does not recognise the old restore points.

Before this catastrophe, the over-keen software had already started a backup onto my MP3 player (assuming it was an external drive).

Thankfully I no longer use the machine for work, and most of our personal stuff is held on memory cards and CD.

Otherwise, the drive itself is easy to use and well enough made - a little plasticky, but compact and robust.

Just DON'T use the NTI software if you want to re-install windows or transfer files to another PC - I will be copying the personal data over directly from now on.

Vine Customer Review of Free Product ( What's this? )
I'm a fanatical backer upper and this 320Gb Toshiba looked ideal for holding multiple data backups - I like having a series of older backups just in case and all our music, photos etc now take up 60Gb and growing. With this drive I'll be able to keep 4 or so generations of data backups. I also synchronise our desktop and laptop data and emails across the local network and mirror the system partitions to another external drive - and backup photos etc online.

The Toshiba drive looks good, is pretty small and gets its power through the single USB plug - no separate power block or 2nd USB plug. I plugged it in and Windows 7 quickly sorted out the drivers. On the disk is a 458 page pdf manual but luckily only the first 20 are in English. The main thing to remember is to safely remove the drive in Windows (so it parks its read/write heads away from the data area). Strangely the manual says the drive is only for Windows XP or Vista. Well it's fine with Windows 7, although I didn't try installing the supplied backup software - NTI Backup Now EZ. That will do a complete system (mirror) backup and create a bootable CD but I use Paragon software and another external drive for that. For data backups I much prefer just copying all our data folders across. The drive comes formatted as FAT32 so it should work with Macs too if you forget the NTI software. There was also some McAfee trial software which I swiftly deleted. I also got rid of a couple of autorun files that kept trying to install the NTI package.

In use the drive is virtually silent and runs very cool. Writing to it from Windows 7 achieved nearly 1Gb per minute, which is fine. Safely remove worked well with Windows 7 as well as Vista (which refuses to release a little Trekstor drive but is fine with the Toshiba).

Received this hard drive and was able to plug it in and transfer my files across without any issue at all via the usb port. Accessing files from it is like it was as quick as if it was an internal drive.

Its a sleek little piece of equipment that sits nicely beside my laptop unobtrusively.

Does what it says it does

Bought this as a christmas gift for hubby. He never reads instructions and I had to force him to put time aside to download his files. He found this product "idiot proof" and simple to use.
He was always having problems with his laptop. Today he has discovered a worm on his desktop so can't access important files. An expert is sorting this out for him but he is so relieved that he managed to back up most of his work on the Toshiba first. Great product.

Toshiba HDDR320E04EL_CS 320GB USB Portable External Hard Drive (McAfee Internet Security, Password Protection, Encryption, Blue)

I am delighted with this drive, easy to use for an older poorly sighted person with poor finger usage. It was easy to set up though the instructions were so tiny impossible to read.
I did a lot of research before ordering and knew the cable was short, and that is a disadvantage, I think a case could be included. If you do order one of these check carefully as they can have a vast difference in postal rates.
I may well order another one. The backup worked smoothly.

I am very pleased with this 320GB EHDD:

- it's truly 'plug and play', loads its own software quickly. It has a user manual in a pdf file but it's not necessary to read as it's all intuitive
- aesthetically pleasing, nice and glossy and a bit curvy - mine's in blue and black
- very portable - light for carriage, stable on the desk
- functional - backed up all my data in a couple of hours
- secure - can password protect etc
- Good value for 320GB at this portability

Can't really think of any cons:
- ok you probably don't need the s/w preloaded on it but it will be useful to many

Delighted to have it

Very pleased with my purchase. Didn't want the back-up facility or the McAfee (already had that). I want it purely as a store for photos etc. Just "format" the device after plugging it in and all the unwanted extras go - leaving you with 320GB of storage space.
