Toscanini's concerts with the BBC Symphony Orchestra in June 1935 were a triumphant success for both conductor and orchestra. Luckily all four evenings were recorded on disc by HMV using a landline from the Queen's Hall to Abbey Road studios where two turntables were used to preserve complete performances. The second of these started recording before the first stopped and therefore no music was lost. The sound quality is excellent; indeed it is easily as good as the best studio sessions of the time. The results were edited and prepared for release but were never approved for issue by Toscanini and, therefore, remained in the archives for the next fifty years. Where works were repeated at different concerts both performances were recorded and what the producer (Lawrence Collingwood or Fred Gaisberg?)) felt to be the best sides from each were edited together. This issue incorporates these versions and does not include any alternate takes.

The music is quite superb. Toscanini was at his peak and his performances combine superb forward rhythmic drive (even at slow tempo), wonderful cantabile, and enormous insight. He is helped by the BBC Orchestra who had been brilliantly trained by Adrian Boult and follow Toscanini's direction with great virtuosity, homogenity, and tonal richness.

It is difficult choose the finest performances on these discs but the 'Enigma Variations', 'La Mer', and Brahms' Fourth Symphony remain among the very finest on record. The Beethoven seventh is also amazing although, arguably, not quite as fine as that Toscanini recorded with the NYPSO in New York the following year. I would not like to be without either.

Mozart's 'Haffner' symphony also receives a very good performance and the Wagner extracts are wonderfully done.

For all Toscanini fans. The newly-created orchestra is at white-heat and this set is utterly unmissable, even though in mono.

Volcanic performances 10 May 2014

These particular performances, all live, show Toscanini in a fascinating and mesmerising way. The sound, while not modern, gives the sound he evoked in a very different hall than NBC 8-H, and with a very different orchestra from the NBC. The New York Phil recordings are more completely achieved, but they WERE recordings, and the NYP was an orchestra he had worked with for a decade (in most of those recordings anyway). So this gives a different view and sound than his later NBC recordings, and together with his NYP recordings, the Philadelphia Orchestra recordings of 1941, and the later live Brahms symphonies with the Philharmonia from 1951, as well as some other later live performances with the BBC & La Scala, add to our experience of his unique sculptural and electrical connection in live concerts.
