Product Description

Pages Magazine

Like Fitzgerald in The Great Gatsby and Easton Ellis in Less than
Zero, Goebel grabs the zeitgeist by the neck

Library Journal (Starred Review)

By turns hilarious, thought-provoking, chilling and sad. Goebel is a quirky, fresh and relevant voice for our time.

5.0 out of 5 stars Torture the artist ... but entertain the reader, 11 Feb 2007
Vincent - the artist in question - is the new man for the 21st century: abrasive, funny, irreverent, profound, abusive, philosophical, opinionated, tender... this is the Millenium Man. Me and fellow readers have got a bit fed up with the Hornby-inspired males who stutter around and never really graple with life: and thank Goebel we have Vincent. A man who truly suffers for his art and wraps the reader into his life, his alcoholism, his romances in a way no American writer has yet done and in a way few British writers can do. Vincent and Goebel are artists for the 21st century.. and my money is on them being the same person! The text may be littered with American slang and a hat load of Britneys and Veronicas, but I think most British readers will get over that. It fizzes along like a fresh DBC Pierre.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great read, 2 Feb 2007
I absolutely LOVED this book. Great story, amazing characters, and the writing is so original I felt like I was in a movie. This SHOULD be a movie. The sensitive artist who doesn't realize he's being manipulated by people pretending to be on his side. Very funny and moving. Five stars, for sure, and highly recommended!

5.0 out of 5 stars hilarious and dark, 26 Jan 2007
I bought this book based on a recommendation from a friend who read it in translation - German I think - and also from the editorial reviews listed here and I have to say I was not disappointed. Who is this guy? His caricatures of some of the most famous 'artistes' of the day are hysterical and his indictment of the manufactured pop industry (films, music, books, the lot) is timely and well aimed. Comparisons to Fitzgerald, Easton Ellis, Palahniuk et al are definitely justified. I can't wait for the UK release of The Anomalies... BUY THIS BOOK!
