Amazon.co.uk Review

Food, life and love share a common lineage going back to antiquity, and Tortilla Soup remakes the connection with pathos and humour. The scenario of three daughters trying to make the break with their domineering father might sound heavy-going, but Hector Elizondo is wonderfully understated as Martin--the patriarchal father who conveys his love through the opulent Mexican lunches he prepares for his daughters each Sunday. The daughters are full of character and are a well-contrasted trio: Leticia (Elizabeth Peña), school-teacher and devout Christian whose life is transformed by the love letters she starts receiving; Carmen (Jacqueline Obradors), business graduate and rising executive whose real goal is to convince her father of her culinary prowess; and Maribel (Tamara Mello), keen to put college on hold and see the world with her new boyfriend. The interaction between them has a theatrical immediacy, and there are excellent contributions from Nikolai Kinsky as Brazilian free-spirit Andy, Paul Rodriquez as gauche baseball coach Orlando and Raquel Welch as the cringingly over-the-top Hortensia. Director María Ripoli gets some persuasive ensemble acting--making the most of a witty and touching script—-along with Mexican cuisine prepared under the supervision of specialist chefs Mary Sue Milliken and Susan Feniger. As a movie about growing-up and taking control, Tortilla Soup is as irresistible as the food you'll see on screen--and equally worth savouring. --Richard Whitehouse

Whenever those words appear in this movie you know that you are in for trouble. The fact that they always raise their ugly heads (as in the real world) over a meal, lovingly prepared by a parent for a child's delectation makes this all the more poignant. This is a remake of Ang Lee's Eat Drink Man Woman (as I remember) but works just as well and is none the worse for it. If you like food and gentle, family feud this is one for you. The lynch pin is the performance of Hector Elizondo - a much underrated actor - his passion for food is his escape from the vaguaries of his children (all female) and the problems they, literally, bring to the table. His quiet frustration and gentle confusion as beautiful meal after beautiful meal is left virtually untouched is a delight. A great movie for a gentle afternoon's entertainment.

Warm family movie 5 April 2012
Format:DVD
Apart from the mouthwatering way in which Hector's character prepares his family's meals so lovingly, the myriad of stories surrounding family simply kept me warmed weeks after seeing it. The family surrounds those coming and going and a new direction in life for the father, though all of it, keeping the family together, still eating together at the table as a family should, where conflict and laughter abound. Families who eat together, communicate, cutting business for psychologists all over the world. It is as it should be in a family. Many lessons to be learned by seeing this movie and one walks out looking to by a Molcajete to make the next salsa with.
Utterly MOUTHwatering.

soft and fluffy 25 Jun 2011

If you like predictable and sentimental, this is for you. True, no-one can be offended by this movie, as all the "real life" is comfy family stuff. The scenario is straightforward enough: a conservative self made man (a mexican chef) trying to come to terms with the coming to maturity of his daughters. The acting is pretty uneven: Hector Elizondo does a good job as the bemused Pater Familia, but Raquel Welch is dire as the pushy "husband hunter". The daughters are all realistically self centred (thinking only about their own careers/romances) while sheltering comfortably in their father's home and scoffing his delicious food. In fact the best part of the film, for me, was watching the "cooking double" preparing the food.
In the end a film of no particular merit, but easy to watch and unlikely to provoke any negative responses.
