Book Description

Tornado of Sparks is a prequel short story to the Bitterwood trilogy. Fifteen years before war erupts between dragons and humans, the wizard dragon Vendevorex seeks a position in the court of the dragon-king Albekizan. In the course of demonstrating his powers to the king, Vendevorex discovers that the humans he just killed had an infant daughter, Jandra. Vendevorex is determined to deliver the baby to her only remaining relative, but his plans are complicated when the child winds up in the grasp of Zanzeroth, a dragon who hunts humans for sport.

This story is a perfect starting point for readers new to the Bitterwood trilogy. For readers who've already read the series, the story sheds new light on the early lives of many of the members of the core cast.

5.0 out of 5 stars Danger! Here be spoilers! 15 Mar. 2014
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
If you haven't read at least some of the Bitterwood Trilogy (and if you haven't, you should ... James Maxey's dragons are Different) then at best you'll be wondering what this short story is about, and at worst it'll provide some major spoilers for the 'main' trilogy.

Without giving too much away, the rather confusingly entitled 'Tornado Of Sparks' fills in a bit of the back story behind Vendevorex and Jandra, two of the Bitterwood trilogy's main protagonists, which had only previously been hinted at.

It's a prequel of sorts, set 15 years or so before the events described in 'Bitterwood' and is a short, yet very satisfying, read - I finished it in around 45 minutes. If anything does let it down, then it's that it really isn't a standalone story - without knowing some of the background of the Bitterwood 'universe' it's probably not going to make a lot of sense.

As it stands, there's a tantalising glimpse into the back-story of some of the trilogy's major characters - it'd be nice if the material herein could be expanded to fill the gap between 'Dawn of the Dragons' (a 'true' prequel, set around 1000 years before 'Bitterwood') and 'Bitterwood', the first of the trilogy, as well as covering the background of some of the other major characters (eg. Kanati/Burke and Blasphet are two characters just ripe for similar treatment)

So, 5 stars if you've already read at least one of the Bitterwood books, probably 1 star otherwise as it probably won't make a lot of sense.

4.0 out of 5 stars An intesting dragon/fantasy prequel to the main trilogy "Bitterwood" 21 Oct. 2012
By R. Nicholson - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Kindle Edition
"Tornado of Sparks" is a short work that serves as a prequel to the "Bitterwood Trilogy" by author James Maxey. This Kindle e-book was a117 Kb download (approx. 21 printed pages) and sold for $0.99 at the time of writing this review.

Spoilers

This story takes place fifteen years before war erupts between dragons and humans (Bitterwood Trilogy). The wizard dragon Vendevorex seeks a position in the court of the dragon-king Albekizan. and in the course of demonstrating his powers to the king, he comes across an infant human girl (Jandra) who he decides to spare.
Another highly place court dragon Zanzeroth, is suspicious of Vendevorex's intentions and the two appear to be somewhat at odds.

End Spoilers

Some thoughts on "Tornado of Sparks"...

1.) and intriguing prequel, as it introduces some of the main players for the trilogy that follows.

2.) it is well written with a nice flow to the story making it an easy and entertaining read.

3.) some thoughtful moments, indicative of some character development. Hopefully carried over into the main trilogy.

4.) one can only surmise of the relationships (if any) to come between Jandra , Vendevorex and Zanzeroth

5.) cover art... attractive and eye-catching.

6.) I know these are dragons, but not sure why the author felt a need to use almost unpronounceable names.

Impression:
I really liked this short work... difficult to know how this prequel will translate into the full fledged trilogy, but there seemed to be no lack of potential for the main work.

As it is 4 1/2 Stars.

4.0 out of 5 stars An excellent prequel tale to the Bitterwood trilogy 19 Oct. 2012
By Media Man - Published on Amazon.com

"Tornado of Sparks" is a prequel fantasy short story to James Maxey's "Bitterwood Trilogy." The story tells the tale of the dragon wizard Vendevorex and his bid to become part of the dragon-king Albekizan's court. For those who haven't read "Bitterwood" the basic premise is anthropomorphic dragons rule the land with humans under their control and commonly as slaves. Vendevorex is the king's royal magical advisor who also happens to have an adopted human daughter as an apprentice. This story details how Vendevorex comes about adopting his human daughter, Jandra. Here are my thoughts on Tornado of Sparks;

Pros

+ Well written.

+ Quick read providing some interesting backstory.

+ Plenty of interesting characters. Favorites included Vendevorex (a wizard) and Zanzeroth (a grizzled veteran hunter). The author does a fantastic job of breathing life into these characters. The interaction between these two characters is a crucial element in the tale to come.

Cons

- Amateurish cover art, especially compared to the previously published books of the trilogy.

- Title doesn't really seem to fit the story.

I read "Bitterwood" over 3 years ago but remember the majority of characters (mostly the dragons) as if it was yesterday. Reading "Tornado of Sparks" felt a bit like putting on an old pair of slippers, everything just felt familiar and comfortable. While I had my gripes with "Bitterwood's" story and rated it three stars, this story encompasses everything I liked about the book. That being the dragons and the unique personalities Maxey has created for them. If you're a fan of the "Bitterwood Trilogy" then this short story is a must read for you. After reading this story it prompted me to purchase the second book and pick up where I left off, even after I told myself I wasn't going to continue the series. Well done Mr. Maxey.
5.0 out of 5 stars READ AFTER DRAGON AGE (BITTERWOOD) TRILOGY! 17 Mar. 2014
By Amazon Customer - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Kindle Edition
A great prequil to the Dragon Age trilogy which is a gripping story that touches on several different genres that just about anybody would enjoy. In depth character and descriptive writing put you in the characters head as well as in the moment and give you vivid visualizations and understaning that make the character stories easy to follow as well as a grand understanding of this world of dragons and man, love and war, and trust and betrayal. I would and HAVE suggested this book as a tool to MANY people that mainly stick to their one or two certain types of genre to broaden their horizons because this book has it all.
4.0 out of 5 stars A Nice Short Story - Read after Bitterwood Trilogy 12 Nov. 2012
By James Marsh - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
Disclaimer: I loved the Bitterwood trilogy.

This is a short story set 15 years before Bitterwood, showing an origin story for Vendeveroux's relationships with the primary sun dragons in Bitterwood and how he and Jandra's relationship was formed.

There are spoilers for the trilogy regarding these relationships as well as Jandra's relationship to another character from the series. It won't spoil the series by any means, but if you want to preserve a few good surprises I would read it after completing the trilogy.

Very well written and I enjoyed revisiting these beloved characters.
