Like a lot of my reviews, I've summarised "what it's about" in the title. This "workshop manual" doesn't really tell you how to rebuild a Peppercorn A1, but it does discuss all the problems you'll encounter in trying to research and build a new locomotive to an existing design, modernised to run on the main lines today.

'Tornado's' fundraisers have come up with a number of innovative schemes and this 'Owner's Workshop Manual' adopts the cover familiar to tens of thousands of car owners who sought guidance on maintaining their vehicle. (Congratulations on choosing a Renault Dauphine, here's how to dismantle the differential . . )

The book is copiously illustrated although quite a high proportion of the pictures will be familiar to anyone who has visited the 'Tornado' project's website or read the magazine articles. It gives an accessible insight into the working lives of the original locomotives although it seems to dodge the question of why the originators of the project couldn't embrace the close similarity of the A2 - same loco with smaller driving wheels - one of which ('Blue Peter') is preserved and tackle a genuinely extinct design. The pictures of the components will allow people to understand more of the complexity of a steam locomotive as well as enjoying the sight of the nicely painted and polished exterior.

I wish there had been space to mention the sources of original components, rescued as mementoes and cherished over the years since the locomotives were scrapped, then donated to 'Tornado' and once more doing what they were intended to.

This book is a must for any railway enthusiast. It details the building of the new A1 Loco TORNADO from literally a scrap of paper as an idea to the finished machine. There is a really good overview of the original class A1s and the latest new loco that would have been a proud member of the class if they existed now. This loco uses the latest technology and has been made for railways in 2010. The book is well thought out and has many photographs that are mostly in colour. The paper and photo reproductions are of very high quality. The text is interesting and informative. This book would make an ideal stocking filler at Christmas instead of socks and ties.(That is if you can wait that long !!)
