Book Description

25 Aug 2012
You can escape your past but can you ever escape yourself?

TORN is a contemporary story, which faces up to the complexities, messiness and absurdities in modern relationships. Life is not a fairy tale; it can be confusing and difficult. Sex is not always awesome; it can be awkward and embarrassing, and it has consequences. You don't always fall for Mr Right, even if he falls for you. And realising you're in love is not always good news. It can make the future look daunting......

Jess has made a series of bad choices. Job, relationships and life-style have all let her down. By escaping the turmoil of her London life, she is putting her young child first. This time she wants to get it right, to devote herself to being a mother. But the country does not offer the romanticised ‘good life’ idyll she pictured.

There’s conflict over a proposed bypass, conflict between friends with very different agendas, conflict between her own nature and her good intentions. And in the face of temptation old habits die hard.

She is torn between the suitable man and the unsuitable boy.

About the Author

Gilli Allan began writing novels in childhood - a hobby pursued throughout her teenage. Though she never finished anything, writing was only abandoned totally when she left home and real life took over from the fiction. Gilli did not go to Oxford or Cambridge, but instead went to Croydon Art College. She did not work on any of the broadsheets or in television, but did a variety of jobs - shop assistant, beauty-consultant, barmaid, as well as a job which involved picking up American tourists in London in order to sell them real estate in Florida. Gilli worked longest and most happily as a commercial artist - specifically as an illustrator in advertising. When Gilli stopped work to have her son she started writing again. Her first two completed novels - Just Before Dawn and Desires & Dreams - were immediately taken on by a publisher. Gilli writes honestly about modern relationships. In TORN she does not shy away from the messiness of life, or underplay the difficulties to be faced by single parents who seek to rebuild their lives.

5.0 out of 5 stars The title says it all. More than just a romance 26 Oct 2012

Thoroughly enjoyed this. It's a well written book with a gutsy storyline that keeps you guessing all the way through, makes you constantly change your opinions of the characters along the way and the rural setting sets the scene beautifully. The issues that the author covers are dealt with in a pretty true-to-life manner, with sensitivity where needed and it invoked a myriad of feelings whilst I read.

Jess is a great character; she is strong yet weak, kind yet a little selfish. Some of the comments her 3 year old son comes out with bring lovely light moments where I laughed out loud. I found Dan easy to love and felt quite protective over him, and whilst it took me a good while to warm to James (he suffers from foot-in-mouth), I eventually did. I was literally torn over who Jess should choose. Can definitely recommend adding this your reading collection.

5.0 out of 5 stars Torn, ripped and shredded. 24 May 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
At last, a romance with some meat on its bones, and a set of teeth.
It's a love story for grown-ups and it's slightly unconventional themes and considerations bring it right into the here and now.
This story of divided love and commitment with its gorgeous rural setting, was right up my street/field!
Jessica the ex-city trader has escaped a violent relationship and takes her small son to a country village, hoping to find some peace and stability. She meets two men; both at opposite ends of the social scale as well as in every other way. As she becomes involved in the lives of Daniel and James, she questions everything she stands for, hopes for and believes in. Rich in character and visual enjoyment, it is very much a feast of contemporary county life with a good dose of reality.
Gilli Allan does not hold back in the sex department either; she delivers the goods with the same clarity and understanding as the rest of the narrative, but then it just wouldn't work any other way. She writes with honesty and insight.
The plot was clever, with all it's emotional twists and turns, and the conclusion was just perfect, albeit a little bitter sweet...and yet all perfectly plausible.

4.0 out of 5 stars Out of the ordinary 25 Mar 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
Gilli Allan's Torn is by no means a regular romance and this lifted it above many others for me. Jessica is edgy, intelligent, guilt-ridden and confused, as many single mothers are, and she takes us through her dilemma's showing her true self and keeping nothing back. With two possible endings this novel kept me guessing right to the last page, and left me thinking about it long after I'd finished it.

2.0 out of 5 stars Depressingly bad
Someone who gave this 5 stars mentioned the 'brutal language' at the beginning as setting the tone for the rest of the book, and I agree, it certainly does, but not in a good way. Read more
