I bought this double album back in '83 and, as I recall, usually only played the first record. I think this was partly because the first record was so good and also, perhaps, because one record of Marc's musical melodrama probably seemed enough at the time. My loss, I guess, because having just seen Marc and his incredible group of musicians perform the whole thing at Meltdown Festival I am knocked out by what a masterpiece this album is. Both disks! Bit of Brel, bit of Scott Walker, Lou Reed, flamenco and lots of music I haven't a clue about all thrown in and given the Marc Almond treatment - it totally works. Antony Hegarty described the effect this album had on him as a young man at the concert, and whilst I can't say it changed my life, I still remember the impact of this poetic spew of words coming out the speakers, when I too was 'alone in my room.' As good as 'Berlin' and that is no mean compliment. Don't download tracks, you need the whole album.

Dark, brooding, charismatic, makes your skin prickle - 'Catch A Falling Star' and 'First Time' are the real gems on this record, particularly the latter. Marc Almond at his best.

If you never listened to Marc Almond then you are missing out on an amazing singer. Since leaving Soft Cell, Marc has produced a pretty impressive number of albums. Torment and Toreros is the second album he made after leaving Soft Cell and it is such a dark, diverse album, and secured a place in my musical collection until the day I die. I'm a fan of 26 years now and counting.
