Book Description

11 Oct 2012
It starts with a series of unexplained events. Earth tremors across the globe. Women being driven insane by their heightened and scrambled senses. And the world is starting to notice - the number one Twitter trend is #realfemmefatales. Governments and scientists are bewildered and silent. The world needs Torchwood, but there's not much of Torchwood left. Captain Jack Harkness has tracked the problem to its source: a village in Peru, where he's uncovered evidence of alien involvement. In Cardiff, Gwen Cooper has discovered something alien and somehow connected to Jack. If the world is to be restored, she has to warn him - but she's quickly becoming a victim of the madness, too...

5.0 out of 5 stars Captain Jack is back! 15 Sep 2012
Format:Hardcover|Amazon Verified Purchase
This eagerly awaited Torchwood novel, penned by John and Carole E. Barrowman, lives up to expectations. Who better to co-write an adventure centred on Captain Jack Harkness than the actor who has played him since 2005 - John Barrowman himself?

The characterisations are perfect: we already know Jack, Gwen and Rhys, but we meet new friends and enemies during the course of this exciting adventure.

Women are being driven mad... strange things are happening to the Earth... but why can't Jack remember key events from his past? And how are they linked? This is what you'll find out as you turn the pages of Exodus Code. Set firmly in the world of Torchwood, after the Miracle, the writing drives the action forward with energy, intelligence and humour.

The story would make an excellent fifth series of Torchwood. Here's hoping!!

4.0 out of 5 stars Better than expected 31 Oct 2012
By Riotoo
Format:Hardcover
This is a review of the audio book . I bought this as a fan of Torchwood, but, as I wasn't keen on Miracle Day, and knowing that this is set after that, I was a bit apprehensive. However I was pleasantly surprised, It was much better than I expected. The characterization of the Torchwood cast was spot on, and I really loved the fact that Jack is back to his flirty self, action hero, rather than the depressed sidelined character he was in Miracle Day. The plot (and chapters) move quickly, and frequently back and forth between different times and events (from present day, to years ago, to a few weeks ago), which can be a bit confusing at first but was OK once I got used to it.

The story itself was intriguing enough to maintain my interest throughout. A couple of plot holes (hence I gave it 4 stars instead of 5), but certainly better than some of the other TW novels I have read in the past, and despite what another reviewer said, Rex, thankfully, barely appears in the story, It's primarily Jack, with Gwen, Rhys. Sergeant Andy also makes an appearance. New characters are also introduced, some of which grabbed my attention, others not so much, but they didn't overshadow what is a basically a good Torchwood story.

I enjoyed listening to it. It helped that Daniel Pirrie did an excellent job reading it, making the characters sound believable. His Jack Harkness accent is pretty good!

Disturbingly, TORCHWOOD - EXODUS CODE is addictive. Firstly, the novel was devoured like Captain Jack seducing his latest snared conquest with the subtly of a delirious ram in the Autumn (Fall) mating season, followed by the eight hour audiobook that gloriously seduced me like summer day's picnic Ploughman's Lunch and a freshly pulled pint of ale.

To be honest, prior to reading the novel, I was not expecting to be entertained, to the shocked, to laugh, to be informed as thoroughly as I eventually was. I kept thinking. "Well, it's a book that John Barrowman has had his inferring mitts all over like a bad herpes infection rash!" and, therefore, insipid, irreverent, merging on the nauseous. How wrong I was.

Cleverly plotted, dynamically structured, reverential to not only the TORCHWOOD brand but to the DOCTOR WHO canon as well,

Co-authored by Carole Barrowman, TORCHWOOD - EXODUS CODE is truly imaginatively cinematic; a guaranteed `page-turner' whose wit, challenging intelligence (at times, and it's not detrimental to the product, it becomes and Anthropology & Humanities essay) and adult themes will reward your effort & time.

The only problem that I have is that with this review I do not want to reveal too much to spoil your (pending) enjoyment. So spoilers will be limited to what I would call `signposts' as opposed to `reveals'.

5.0 out of 5 stars Captain Jack's back saving the world 16 Sep 2012
Format:Hardcover|Amazon Verified Purchase
From the very first chapter this adventure is a real page turner so much so that I read it in 2 sittings. The characters of Jack, Gwen, Rhys and Andy are well known to TW fans but this story will appeal to non-woodies as well. It is possible to read and enjoy without knowing any of Jack's or TW's history so on this basis deserves to be viewed as a stand alone novel.
The writing is pacy and the plot, far from being formularic as some of the other TW novels have been, is quite complex. The new characters are well drawn and the flashback chapters are a real bonus in establishing the story and building the excitement to a fantastic climax. It is the perfect follow up to Miracle Day and there are hints at how our favourite characters have been changed by those events.
The writing as we should expect is quite different to Hollow Earth, the Barrowman sibling's book for young adults proving that they have versatility and this would make a great film. Let's hope this is the first of a series of TW novels by Captain Jack himself!
