Set after "miracle day" this sees Gwen and Rhys (and Anwyn) getting involved with both an alien shapeshifter and Homeland Security. Its not perfect- no sign of Jack, no explaination for why they are still kicking around the US after all they have been put through over there, and its very careful not to add anything canonically that the (hopefully) future episodes may have to live with- kind of a side story, but for all that its well written and brilliantly read by Kai Owen (hes got the voices down to a T- especially in flashback to Owen its scarily good). It doesnt really take torchwood anywhere new, but for all that its engaging and entertaining.

Since the episode were Owen and Tosh were killed off Torchwood was not the same but after they killed off Ianto Jones Torchwood seems empty. The life of the series and stories is gone. The spirit of the first audiobooks does not carry through to this audiobook.
The story line is strained. How can there be a torchwood of just two people? Captain Jack and Gwen Cooper?

Despite Kai Owen's over-exuberant enunciation and dodgy American accent, this is an entertaining story featuring the remaining Torchwood member - Gwen Cooper, her husband Rhys, and an alien life-form that is sucking human bodies dry right left and centre.
A flashback to the old Torchwood gang (Series One and Two from the TV show) before RTD started killing them off, maintains the tenuous connection with the original, and the story will be familiar in tone and style to long-time followers of Torchwood.

Very enjoyable. Brought me back to the first and second serial episodes of Torchwood, for a moment even literally during a flashback. It's not so dramatic or emotional as Children of Earth of Miracle day, but as a short story it holds up very well. Even though Captain Jack or other Torchwood members (that would only be Rex I suppose for now) are not present, it still has the genuine feel of those Cardiff episodes, albeit taking place in Washington this time. There is a perfect legitimate reason for Gwen and Rhys (and Annwen) to be there, I thought it was a good idea to support Esther's sister and children by way of a hidden torchwood Cache (even though it is a bit strange that they have access to it now, and the amount of money is a bit overdone). Kai Owen reads it out well, although I do tend to like the radio plays with more voice acting and musical effects more than just the relating of a story by one person. But Kai manages to put in the accents very well. Great fun!

Having been a fan of the show since it started I buy the books and audio stories when they are available. Kai Owen is absolutely brilliant reading these stories and I am now waiting for the following audios. Love this one too.
