Book Description

8 Mar 2012 Audio Original
Kai Owen reads this exclusive audio adventure set after the conclusion of 'Miracle Day', featuring Gwen Cooper and Rhys Williams. Washington D.C., post-Miracle. The city has been hit by a spate of very unusual serial killings. The victims are different ages and genders and the locations vary, but each body has one thing in common - it has been reduced to a dried-up, dessicated husk. Special Agent Lucas Avery has dealt with some tricky puzzles in his time, but this is stranger than anything he's ever encountered. His one lead is a pair of names: 'Gwen' and 'Rhys'...For Gwen Cooper and Rhys Williams, still recovering from the recent, traumatic events that shook the world, life is about to get difficult and dangerous again. For it's not just Homeland Security on their trail, but something else - something alien, terrifying and deadly...Written specially for AudioGO by Ian Edginton, "Army of One" is read by Kai Owen, who played Rhys Williams in the hit BBC television series.

Set after "miracle day" this sees Gwen and Rhys (and Anwyn) getting involved with both an alien shapeshifter and Homeland Security. Its not perfect- no sign of Jack, no explaination for why they are still kicking around the US after all they have been put through over there, and its very careful not to add anything canonically that the (hopefully) future episodes may have to live with- kind of a side story, but for all that its well written and brilliantly read by Kai Owen (hes got the voices down to a T- especially in flashback to Owen its scarily good). It doesnt really take torchwood anywhere new, but for all that its engaging and entertaining.

Since the episode were Owen and Tosh were killed off Torchwood was not the same but after they killed off Ianto Jones Torchwood seems empty. The life of the series and stories is gone. The spirit of the first audiobooks does not carry through to this audiobook.
The story line is strained. How can there be a torchwood of just two people? Captain Jack and Gwen Cooper?

4.0 out of 5 stars Still hanging in there 6 Nov 2012

Despite Kai Owen's over-exuberant enunciation and dodgy American accent, this is an entertaining story featuring the remaining Torchwood member - Gwen Cooper, her husband Rhys, and an alien life-form that is sucking human bodies dry right left and centre.
A flashback to the old Torchwood gang (Series One and Two from the TV show) before RTD started killing them off, maintains the tenuous connection with the original, and the story will be familiar in tone and style to long-time followers of Torchwood.
