Harvey Fierstein at his finest, as the gravel-voiced drag queen who takes time out from growling torch songs in a seventies night spot, to fight with his mother, bury his father, and turn up at his adopted son's school in bunny slippers. One of the most beautiful and touching stories ever seen, which somehow makes you laugh and cry in the same breath. More than any other film, Torch Song Trilogy cleverly highlights the turmoil between a gay child and his parents. The script twists and turns between the mother and son's viewpoint, as they struggle to accept each other. Anne Bancroft gives a stunning performance, and illustrates the clash between a mother's love and centuries of in-built homophobia. Gay or straight, this is a film that every human being should see.

Written by and starring Harvey Fierstein; this is the story of a young gay Drag performer and his search for happiness as part of a gay family. It also stars Matthew Broderick as one of his partners. The Lead name is Anne Bancroft who plays Arnold's (fierstein) jewish and opinionated mother in what is an ideal piece of casting.
The storyline shows Arnolds attempts at finding both true love in a gay world and a family by means of the adoption of a young gay man. It is full of excellent one liners and Fiertsteins own self-deprecating humour. It is both funny and tragic and shows a side to gay life that few straight people know about. This film is a must for those who are interested in this genre and is a forerunner of later gay films which did not stereotype the gay characters. An excellent adaption of Fiersteins original stage play. Lots of memorable dialogue and scenes, tears and laughter.

A must for lovers of drag, pre Aids gay life, family conflict and a glimpse of the Gay World as it really is or was. A great story line, some violence, love found, love lost, love re born. It knnocks Queer as Folk into a cocked hat. originally a stage show, it transfers to TV big time. just have the tissues ready. This movie covers so many 'gay' related issues from family, tacky drag to moddy drag songs, relationships to gay adoption. A 'Must' have for those who love the Birdcage, Tales of the City, My Beautiful Launderet ect.

I love this film, had it on VHS and now got DVD. First saw it on TV many years ago and have enjoyed watching it several times since. There is something really honest about the story, which is brought to life by the excellent acting by Harvey, Ann et al. Not to mention Matthew Broderick looking sooooo young! Well it was 20 years ago, I know.... crikey, I feel old.

You dont have to be Gay or `Straight' to watch this SUPPERB film !! It is a classic. Oh..... so funny, moving and tragic. All the cast need to be mentioned as they all shine in their individual roles. Harvey, as Arnold, is just fantastic and Anne Bancroft as his Jewish mother, trying to get him married off......... to a woman !! is awesome. Anne plays a jewish mother with campness !!!

An excellent film. The best part for me, is when he goes down to colleage, where his adopted son attends in his dressing gown and rabbit slippers !!!

For those who have never heard of this film and wish to give it ago, remember it is from a Broadway Play, written by the main actor in the film, Harvey, so at the beginning, you will see the main character, getting ready to perform a drag act and talking you through a `diary format' with long flashbacks.

For those who do not know who Harvey Fernstien is. Anyone who watched ` Independence Day, Harvey is the character who is with Jeff Goldblum who keeps wittering on about having to phone his mother !!

Personally, this film should of been nominated for an Oscar !!

I have just watched Torch Song Trilogy for the first time and I am kicking myself for not having seen it before. Spurred on by my recent enjoyment of a book about a drag queen (Dial M for Mascara), I thought I'd give TST a try. This is an utterly brilliant movie with some totally stellar performances (Anne Bankroft is breathtaking). It has instantly become one of my all time favourite movies. Funny, sad and thought provoking, it has everything you could want for a great night in.

Torch Song Trilogy is a film which can be watched and enjoyed by anyone (15+). A great film to give to your friends and family to watch, especially if you're on the verge of "coming out".
Harvey Fierstein will take you through the movie and play with you're every emotion, you'll laugh and cry with him as he goes through a life of dealing with eratic girlfriends, a couple of lovers and a very narrow minded mother. Who knows, some of you may even link with the character and i'm sure that we all have friends and relations like any one of the characters in the film.
I suggest you buy two copies - one to keep and one to loan to friends and family. A film you'll want to watch over and over again. Grab your hankies - guys and girls - you'll need them!

A film that combines tragedy, humour and a window on a freer life...Broderick went on to become a star and Bancroft is wonderfully acerbic as the mother.Ultimately a joyful view of life in a bygone age.
