Harvey Fierstein at his finest, as the gravel-voiced drag queen who takes time out from growling torch songs in a seventies night spot, to fight with his mother, bury his father, and turn up at his adopted son's school in bunny slippers. One of the most beautiful and touching stories ever seen, which somehow makes you laugh and cry in the same breath. More than any other film, Torch Song Trilogy cleverly highlights the turmoil between a gay child and his parents. The script twists and turns between the mother and son's viewpoint, as they struggle to accept each other. Anne Bancroft gives a stunning performance, and illustrates the clash between a mother's love and centuries of in-built homophobia. Gay or straight, this is a film that every human being should see.

Written by and starring Harvey Fierstein; this is the story of a young gay Drag performer and his search for happiness as part of a gay family. It also stars Matthew Broderick as one of his partners. The Lead name is Anne Bancroft who plays Arnold's (fierstein) jewish and opinionated mother in what is an ideal piece of casting.
The storyline shows Arnolds attempts at finding both true love in a gay world and a family by means of the adoption of a young gay man. It is full of excellent one liners and Fiertsteins own self-deprecating humour. It is both funny and tragic and shows a side to gay life that few straight people know about. This film is a must for those who are interested in this genre and is a forerunner of later gay films which did not stereotype the gay characters. An excellent adaption of Fiersteins original stage play. Lots of memorable dialogue and scenes, tears and laughter.

A must for lovers of drag, pre Aids gay life, family conflict and a glimpse of the Gay World as it really is or was. A great story line, some violence, love found, love lost, love re born. It knnocks Queer as Folk into a cocked hat. originally a stage show, it transfers to TV big time. just have the tissues ready. This movie covers so many 'gay' related issues from family, tacky drag to moddy drag songs, relationships to gay adoption. A 'Must' have for those who love the Birdcage, Tales of the City, My Beautiful Launderet ect.
