Review

This novelist goes fearlessly into this place of raw grief and inappropriate lust and desperate love and simply reports what she sees: These are people who live dense, perplexing, fascinating and authentic lives --Washington Post

Torch is a steady stream of finely wrought portrayals of nuance, moments and emotions. . . . Lovely turns of phrase are coupled with subtle and keen observations and truisms that remind a reader why she reads --Newsday

A heartbreaking anatomy of one family's grief... Beautifully written and authentic --People --This text refers to an alternate Paperback edition.

I could only see one other review of this and I'm afraid I have to mostly agree with it. If you've read Cheryl Strayed's Wild, which I have, there's not much new material here. And Wild was much more pacey and interesting. Sorry Cheryl! I did finish Torch and there's nothing wrong with it as a story, it's just we've been there before and last time it was "real".

I hope now that the author has this novel out of her system, she goes on to write something a bit more exciting and new. Or go back to the experiential travelogue stuff of Wild, because that was very cool and thoroughly enjoyable! :)

I am halfway through this book and literally can't put it down, occasionally having to stand still impatiently whilst my Kindle charges. Having read Dear Sugar and Wild, I find this novel exceptionally lyrical and moving.

Having read and really enjoyed 'Wild' by this author, I bought this book on the strength of it. I struggled to finish it - in fact I didn't. The story is about as slow as it gets, based on four people, one of whom dies and how the other three - husband, son and in more depth, daughter, cope with their loss. There was quite a bit of this 'coping with grief' from the death of her mother in the first book. Why she felt she had to go there again I don't know but wished I hadn't gone along with her. Seriously, not recommended.
