Book Description

12 Aug 2005
Monica Moran was not the woman she used to be. Or rather she was not just the woman she used to be. She was at least one other woman as well and their combined weight sat heavily on her overburdened bones. Where her breasts had been generous twenty years ago, they were now magnanimous, munificent...she leaned forward to negotiate the bottom step and Bernadette couldn't help clucking in disapproval. If that cleavage was any closer to the ground you could stand a bicycle in it. Twenty years ago, when Father Barry ruled the Tullabeg roost, Bernadette Teegan and Monica Moran vied for his attention. Then Monica went away and life settled down. Now Monica is back. And Bernadette has no intention of making hers a happy visit. She has plans to snare the most eligible bachelor in town, Cormac Hegarty, Estate Agent, and keep nephew Michael's soul (and overalls) spotless. But Monica has plans too! A comedy of errors, misdirection and cross-wired agendas, "Toppling Miss April" is a triumph of flesh over fantasy, when menopause is just a pause between men and experience counts for everything.

5.0 out of 5 stars Ealing comedy meets Father Ted 10 Aug 2006
By Alba52
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
A zany, intelligent farce, reminiscent of Tom Sharpe's outrageous comic novels. Perhaps not one to give to your granny or the vicar, but if you're looking for well-written comedy with memorable, original characters, this hits the spot.

5.0 out of 5 stars Charming screwball comedy 9 Dec 2005
Format:Paperback
A slice of oddball Irish life, Toppling Miss April is sort of Father Ted meets Dangerous Liaisons. The story takes place in Tullabeg, where reedy parish housekeeper Bernadette Teegan annoys her boss, henpecks her teenaged nephew, and seeks true love. She sets her sights on the town's most eligible bachelor, and is on her way to winning him - at least by her own delusional lights - when an old rival returns to town: Monica Moran, a woman of Falstaffian dimension and appetites. From there the characters embark on various schemes to seduce the objects of their desire and thwart their foes, a series of comic misunderstandings that could be subtitled Love Among the Myopic. The fun lies in the fact that they're blind to their ineptitude; they see themselves as connivers of Machiavellian genius, when in reality none of them could work their way out of a Su Doku square.

Adrienne Dines writes with comic panache and with empathy for her bungling villagers. Their malice is hapless, their seductions innocent. The resolution will leave you laughing. Great fun.
