had this pump for ages, it works great but then i lost the screw on end which is detachable for changing the valve compatability. I called topeak, who said that for the price of that component, it's not worth charging me. They just put a replacement in the post and sent it me for free. Normally companies rip you off for spares but this one have gone the other way, so i decided to write my first ever review to big them up, and i'll be favoring their products in the future.
Most bicycles, even good quality ones, are supplied with tyre pumps of an inferior standard. The same can often be said of saddles. I wanted a modern, top quality hand pump to replace the one delivered with my GT Off-road bike. I have known of Topeak for as long as I have ridden bicycles and I trust their products in terms of their manufacturing quality and performance. It was therefore a no-brainer to scan their products for a high performance hand pump and the one here attracted my attention.
It is an attractive silver-grey-black colour and the valve head can accommodate 2 sizes of valve. The head has an integral 'lock' which clamps onto the valve stem of the tyre regardless of which type is encountered. The pumping action is like a 2-stroke engine, each stroke supplies air to the tyre. Most pumps are like 4-stroke engines, only the push stroke supplies air to the tyre.
The pump is short and could be fitted to any of the 3 main frame tubes of a conventional bicycle using the mounting bracket supplied with the pump. (Amazon fails to mention the bracket). I say 'conventional bicycle' because many modern bicycle designs are not designed around a simple triangular framework, rather their manufacturers use frame designs that may look attractive or different but which are no more efficient or as strong as the simpler triangular design. These modern frames do not always have convenient mounting points for hand pumps and clips have to be employed instead.
Performance-wise, 2-stroke hand pumps are far more efficient than single-stroke pumps because they inflate tyres twice as fast. Furthermore, a locking valve head able to accommodate 2 types of valve is a real bonus because it saves having 2 pumps.
But for checking and inflating tyres at home there is nothing to beat a good, not-portable, foot pump. The Topeak pump is highly recommended.
Claims and reviews are true. There is very little effort needed to reach those high tyre pressures. I was going to buy a floor pump as I have arthritis, but with this I can take it anywhere. Great product.
I was so happy I bought this because I had a puncher the same day lol......fantastic pump and really good price,,,,,,,,the pump is so good, not sure the need for the harpoon handle, which can get in the way . Still happy with the pump,,,,,,,,,,:)
