Perfect! 19 Feb 2012
Format:Paperback
I LOVE this book. I can't help thinking it would be perfect for reading as a class book in upper primary. It deals with so many important issues - loneliness, bereavement, friendship, bullying, acceptance - not to mention football - without the slightest hint of preaching - just a gentle, beautifully told tale of a little boy coming to terms with a new country, new family, new school and new friends. The illustrations are adorable too. I can't recommend it highly enough.

Perhaps I should declare my possible bias from the start - I have been lucky enough to have taught Wendy at University over the last few years - and I am aware of her interest and commitment to writing children's fiction that reflects the diversity of our society. So I would give the story 5 stars on that count alone - but this little book is so much more than that - it is a charming, engaging account of boyhood with its passions, contradictions and pain. The detail is drawn from a child's point of view, so avoiding the interfering author's voice. A great debut novel - I know Wendy has many more stories in her - I hope we see lots of them in print soon!

A real charming read, especially for young readers. Travel the journey with Tópé from leaving Nigeria to starting a new school in a new land and adjusting to his new life. Triumph with him in the football tournament and enjoy the dundun drummers perform. Excellent!
