Product Description

Product Description

A showcase of 40 of the world's most outstanding skiing areas on four continents. From the lively apres-ski in the fairytale setting of southern Germany's charming Garmisch-Partenkirchen to the demanding black diamond runs of Whistler in British Columbia, the high-tech wonder of the world's largest snow-making systen at Lake Tahoe, USA to the sukii-jou (small ski areas) of Japan's Nagano Prefecture, this collection explores the very best in skiing experiences available. Whether you are a daredevil heliskier, yearning for superb scenery and solitary carving in perfect powder conditions, or have an appetite for apres-ski, this book should provide the inspiration. The author infuses his narrative with a personal note and anecdotal detail. The Ski Club of Great Britain has supplied fact boxes for each resort: accessibility, height, number and level of pistes, and number of lifts.

About the Author

Ski correspondent for the Financial Times since 1986, Arnie Wilson has skied in 535 resorts in over 20 countries and has no plans to retire until he has made it 1000. Arnie's other books include the Thomas Cook International Top 50 Ski Resorts (1989) and Ski The World (1998). He contributes regularly to Country Life, High Life, Business Traveller, The Good Skiing and Snowboarding Guide, GQ Active and all British ski magazines. He has interviewed skiing celebrities such as Clint Eastwood, Arnold Schwarzenegger, Princess Caroline of Monaco, Buzz Aldrin and Cindy Crawford.

2.0 out of 5 stars Pretty pictures but seriously out of date, 15 Oct 2009
This review is from: Top Ski Resorts of the World (Hardcover)
Great photos of mountains and skiing in the early 90's. This book is at least 15 years out of date in regards to skiing, resorts and even weather pattens.

3.0 out of 5 stars Coffee Table Only, 27 Dec 2002
By Jennifer Greer "eponinelove" - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: Top Ski Resorts of the World (Hardcover)
I would love to visit all of the ski areas mentioned in this book, but the book does not describe or illustrate any of them well. Each resort has been given approximately 4 pages of space in the book. There are a few pictures of slopes or base areas, but not enough to give the reader any feel for what the resorts really looks like. In addition, the information the author conveys about each area is quite minimal. There is a map of where in the world each of the resorts is located, and a small box containing directions to the particular resort, mountain height, number of lifts and difficulty level of runs. However, there are no trail maps. The author's incredibly brief references to a few of his favorite runs may be helpful if one writes down their names and finds them upon arriving at the resorts, yet there is not enough description of the terrain to truly inform the reader of what these ski areas are like. Furthermore, no information is given about where to stay or eat once one has arrived at the resorts. While this book looks attractive sitting on a coffee table, its use should be limited to just that.

3.0 out of 5 stars Not the most comprehensive book, 12 Oct 2005
By dasn0wman "dasn0wman" - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: Top Ski Resorts of the World (Hardcover)
So this is not the most comprehesive book out there...not sure if one exists that can be comparable to some ski web sites out there. I can't believe there is no ski map to associate with each location. I mean, we are talking about the "Top Ski Resorts of the World!" This is not your run-of-the-mill, three-hour drive local ski resort unless you happen to live next to Whistler Mountain (Damnn you). The least they could do is provide a small ski map of the world-renown resort. And there is just not enough information or stats for each mountain. Despite the information shortcoming, I still give it three stars for the beautiful photography - the only reason I bought the book in the first place - I'm no fool.

5.0 out of 5 stars Top Ski Resorts of the World, 10 Feb 2008

Fantastic photography, great coffee table book to look at any time that you can't get to the mountains. I'm going to try and work my way through all the resorts mentioned and cross them off progressively from my dream list.
