Amazon.co.uk Review

Jingoism, beefcake, military hardware, and a Giorgio Moroder rock score reign supreme over taste and logic in this Tony Scott film about a maverick trainee pilot (Tom Cruise) who can't follow the rules at a Navy aviation training facility. The dogfight sequences between American and Libyan jets at the end are absolutely mechanical, though audiences loved it at the time. The love story between Cruise's character and that of Kelly McGillis is like flipping through pages of advertising in a glossy magazine. This designer action movie from 1986 is made more palatable by the canny casting of good actors in dumb parts. Standouts include Anthony Edwards--who makes a nice impression as Cruise's average-Joe pal--and the relatively unknown Meg Ryan in a small but memorable appearance. --Tom Keogh

Top Gun Favourite 3 Jan 2005
Format:DVD
Absolute cheese on a stick, but Top Gun proves that that's not always a bad thing. This movie's got everything - an arrogant prodigy who'd be out on his ass if he wasn't so good, a sensible, more down to earth best friend, a love interest, an arch nemesis and his dumb sidekick, a few cool high fives and catchphrases, the emotional death scene, a euphoric victory act and of course, some unforgettable action sequences. What more could any red-blooded child of the eighties ask for?

Anyone born around 1980 will remember how everyone was doing that double high five and saying 'talk to me Goose' to the kid next to them in class. Certainly one of my all time favourites - entertaining stuff.

Top Blu Ray 9 Feb 2011
By AndyM
Format:Blu-ray
This is a review of the Blu Ray NOT the DVD. I'm sure everyone knows the story by now but in brief Tom Cruise plays Maverick who after an encounter with a pair of Migs which ends with his wingman handing in his wings is sent off to the Navy's Top Gun program where he battles it out with other pilots to be the best of the best whilst also battling with with an old story of an error his father made which caused the death of other pilots with a little love interest thrown in. Maybe not everyone's film and admittedly not the most intricate story lines of films but I really like it none the less. So a quick to the point review of the Blu Ray. Picture is much improved over the DVD, remember this is a 1986 film way before DVD was out and even more so before HD was thought of. I have to say I was very impressed with the sound over the DVD, planes rushing by were much more detailed through the surround and the overall soundtrack was greatly improved. I will reiterate this is a 1986 film and I've seen much more recent films not have the best transfer to Blu Ray.

Paramount's Blu-ray disc of Top Gun is clean and crisp, getting the most out of John Schwartzman's slick cinematography. The disc is liberally slathered with DS and 5.1 options in English, French and Spanish. Savant's viewing reminded him very much of the original multi-track experience, which definitely had the audience in its pocket.

Jerry Bruckheimer gathers his director Scott, writer Epps and some military experts for the commentary, while a multi-part docu Danger Zone covers the making of the film. Tony Scott provides an optional commentary for a storyboard comparison, and an extra docu The Best of The Best lauds the expertise of the Navy's elite fliers, excuse me, aviators.

Top Gun's appeal was due in no small part to its hot soundtrack, and the disc includes music videos for Take My Breath Away, The Top Gun Anthem, Heaven in Your Eyes and Danger Zone, which shows up every time the planes go into action, as if programmed into the automated cockpit environment. Top Gun was criticised for grafting MTV glitz on a Military back drop, but nobody's denying that the mix isn't effective.

TV spots, more EPK featurettes (one on survival techniques) and Tom Cruise interviews finish up this great package.

He's dangerous, but he can be our wingman anytime.
Pete "Maverick" Mitchell is a hot shot super jet pilot in waiting. Trouble is is that he has a disregard for authority and carries around a family burden into the bargain. Read more
