Top Dog Nostalgia 24 Nov 2010

This is the fourth release in De Wolfe Music's commercial series to celebrate their centenary. The 26 tracks are a mix of TV and radio themes and incidental music recorded between 1960 and 1982 and most, though probably not all, will be familiar to people of a certain age. As expected from the vaults of a library music record company much of the music is of the easy listening variety with the odd exception. There are many highlights. The extraordinary 'Roobarb and Custard' theme tune (all 41 seconds of it) is a mad and frantic delight by Jonny Hawksworth, a mainstay of the UK library music scene who appears four times on this album. Elsewhere Wayne Hill's Left Bank Two, although recorded in 1963, is synonymous with the 1970s and has featured on countless adverts and TV programmes. Jack Trombey's 'Eye Level' - the theme to Van Der Valk - opens the album and Simon Haseley's Precinct has a distinctive Blaxploitation vibe.

On the whole its easy listening, its elevator music at times and its nostalgic but it ain't half decent. Detailed liner notes, mainly concentrating on the TV and radio shows, are included.

Song title, composer / artist, (TV / radio show):

1. Eye Level - John Trombey (Van Der Valk)
2. Accroche-Toi, Caroline - Claude Vasori (Vision On)
3. Roohbarb - Johnny Hawkworth (Roobarb & Custard)
4. Liberty Bell - Sousa (Monty Python's Flying Circus)
5. Top Dog - Ivor Slaney (The Men from The Ministry)
6. George & Mildred - Johnny Hawksworth (George & Mildred)
7. Comedy Hour - Ivor Slaney (Harry Worth)
8. The Gonk - Herbert Chappell (Seeing and Doing)
9. Left Bank Two - Wayne Hill / The Noveltones (Vision On 'The Gallery' Theme)
10. Precinct - Simon Haseley (Whodunnit!)
11. The Power Game - Wayne Hill (The Power Game)
12. Up To Date - Johnny Hawksworth (Man About the House)
13. The Greatest Show On Earth - Peter Reno (Queenie's Castle)
14. Fruity Flutes - Reg Wale (Farmhouse Kitchen)
15. Ready To Serve - Johnny Hawksworth (Delia Smith's Cookery Course)
16. Inspector Rose - J. Snow (The Odd Man)
17. Radioscope - Georges Delerue (The Round Britain Quiz)
18. Henry's Cat - John Hyde (Henry's Cat)
19. Trombones On Parade - Jack Trombey (Junior Showtime)

There are TV theme albums aplenty out there - and most are terrible. They offer 'original themes' or even 'original TV soundtrack themes' but most are just cheap rip-offs with the music re-orchestrated and ruined. This, however, is the real thing. Some of these themes have appeared before but many have not and it is particularly interesting to have 'The Kids from 47a' with their twangy banjos and the wonderful theme from 'The Odd Man' which I thought I'd forgotten until I heard it again and it brought back childhood memories. I suppose the real odd man here is the forbidding 'Timeslip' theme which is a bit out of place amongst the other bouncy pieces but it is still good to hear it again. Full marks to DeWolfe for this excellent CD - Great for party games at Christmas (guess the theme). I hope they do a follow-up.
