Product Description

Amazon.co.uk Review

Here's the idea: get the BBC audience to vote on their favourite British, holiday and all-time classic dishes, pop in a celebrity chef (Antony Worrall Thompson) to show us how to whip them up on telly, and spin a book out of it. Voilà, The Top 100 Recipes from the Food & Drink TV Series is on the shelves. Perhaps a more appropriate name for this collection of recipes would be "How to Cook Like a Pub Chef", as none of these dishes would be out of place on the menu at your local. Spaghetti bolognaise, beef wellington, chicken kiev and rhubarb crumble are recreated and reworked (anchovy essence and Worcestershire sauce are added to the bolognaise sauce) just enough to allow you to claim them as your "own special recipes". That's about the extent to which most of these recipes will stretch the culinary imagination.

However, the book doesn't only focus on what the public voted for; AWT adds 70 of his own favourite dishes, and here you'll find some more interesting and inspiring recipes. (Isn't that what we buy cookbooks for?) Lemon polenta cake with rosemary syrup was the talking point of one dinner party, and the roast walnut pesto seems to be foolproof. AWT promises that none of these dishes are "beyond reach". The focus is definitely on uncomplicated recipes that steer clear of any of the latest food trends and remain (mostly) grounded in your mum's recipe collection. Most of these dishes will not impress your friends, but they will warm the cockles on a cold winter's night when only comfort food will do. -–Amelia Crook

Review

The BBC's longest running food programme, "Food and Drink" has inspired viewers for years and its latest presenter, Antony Worrall Thompson, presents the best dishes of the last few series. Selected by viewers polled in the "Radio Time" and "Good Food" magazine, and accompanied by Antony Worrall Thompson's own favourite dishes, this is a mouth-watering selection of culinary treats. Features include the top ten best-of-British dishes, the top ten best classic dishes and the top ten best holiday dishes, all of which demonstrate that the Brits have begun to get more adventurous in their cooking. Although steak and kidney pudding and roast beef are still the first choice of most, there are surprise inclusions such as fajitas, tempuras and gravadlax. With the reliable experience and expertise of the "Food and Drink" team, all the recipes are clearly explained and easy to make, many of them illustrated in colour. So why not treat yourself to a British favourite and see for yourself why it was voted one of the top ten favourites? - Lucy Watson

5.0 out of 5 stars Yum!!, 14 Feb 2009
This review is from: The Top 100 Recipes from "Food and Drink": Includes the Viewers All-Time Favourite Dishes (Hardcover)
I immediately liked the look and feel of this book. I find the photographs of each dish very attractive and mouth wateringly tempting...Yum! I wanted to cook the dishes right away! Each page is presented in a consistent, clear and simple format (In my opinion, a lot of people will immediately note and find this very helpful). Having the ingredients down the left-hand margin in bold font enable me to more easily and quickly identify the ingredients required for each dish. My cooking experience is further enhanced by having each stage of the preparation and cooking process nicely spaced out and presented in numbered paragraphs to the right of the ingredients list. Each recipe commences with a little commentary about the style of dish/or a particular ingredient contained witin the dish. If the idea is to get me in the mood for cooking, it works!

1.0 out of 5 stars A guide to basic cooking - but far too ordinary!, 31 Aug 2004
This review is from: The Top 100 Recipes from "Food and Drink": Includes the Viewers All-Time Favourite Dishes (Hardcover)
This recipe book was designed to accompany the BBC Food and Drink Series, presented by Antony Worall-Thompson. The TV series was imaginatively put together, and the camera succeeded in making the finished dishes look inspirational! It made you want to buy the book. But in comparison, the recipe book does not live up to expectations and sadly, I have to say it is a real disappointment! The way that the recipe collection is presented in print is far too ordinary and matter-of-fact, and even the photography seems to lack lustre of any kind. In my view, the ideas do not come across as well as they seemed to do on the screen, and so the book itself is rather a let-down after the TV series.
