THE BEST COMIC EVER JUST GOT BETTER!, 7 Oct 2003
Alan Moore has done it again! Top 10 Book 1 was the first comic I had read in years and it was like a breath of fresh air. The premise is simplicity, "who would police a city populated entirely by superpowered citizens...?" I found myself going out and buying all the Moore written books I could find and was similarly enthralled. For those who are unaware and have not read Book 1 then shame on you, buy it and read it, and then buy Book 2. It follows the same characters as Book 1, continuing some stories for those who have been paying attention. There are shocks aplenty as well, which I will not ruin for those who enjoy going in blind. Funny, inventive, insane, spectacular, gob-smacking...I simply cannot praise Top 10 enough. After such a promising start there was an initial fear that a sequel volume could not possibly hope to live up to my expectations, but it does. The sheer amount of detail alone on every page is enough to make you sit up and beg for more. If you're familiar with sci-fi, comics, films and plenty of other media you are likely to recognise many background faces and places, this is just one of the pleasures to be had after you have speed read it for the first time. If my enthusiasm has made you slightly ill, I'll leave you with this last note. Top 10 Book's 1 and 2 comprise more inventiveness and sheer genius in terms of storytelling and artwork than practically every other comic I have ever read. I know that sounds unlikely and many people will disagree but it really is that good. If you do like it I'd also urge you to try the other ABC titles of Alan Moore: The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen, Tom Strong, Promethea and Tomorrow Stories. (And for those lucky individuals who can be bothered to enter comic shops then look for the Top 10 spin-off Smax, which is absolutely superb). I'll stop dribbling now. Read this book. You know you want to.
