So check this out, Toots Hibbert, pioneer of Jamaican music and a man with a voice on a par with Otis Redding and Marvin Gaye, puts his own unique spin on some of the finest ballads ever to emerge from McElmore Avenue.

Toots brings not just his deep roots in gospel, reggae and ska, but also tinges of funk to the proceedings, accompanied by a blue chip roster of backing musicians including Andrew Love of the Memphis Horns. The material, recorded at "Ardent Studio C, Memphis Tenessee" (the original Stax studios are alas no more), covers a gamut of hits from artists such as Otis Redding, Eddie Floyd, Al Green, Ann Peebles and even one of Toots's own: See It My Way.

The CD, which was nominated for a Grammy, comes beautifully packaged in a luxuriously thick miniature LP slipcase with 'Limited Edition' embossed in gold on the back.

A must for Toots fans and even open-minded lovers of the soul originals.

An album that just makes me feel so good. A near perfect fusion of Reggae and Soul.
Toots Hibbert always had soul in his voice, but here he brings it all home.
Otis Redding, Al Greene and James Carr are all given the respect due to them with an added dose of Jamaica. Add covers of Eddie Floyd, Ann Peebles and one of Toots's own and you have one of the very finest albums anywhere.
Superb backing from the finest JA and Memphis session players, Sly and Robbie, Teenie Hodges and Andrew Love of the Memphis Horns makes the sound an authentic mix of reggae and southern soul.

Toots Hibbert has made much better records than this. I've had the LP for many years but whereas "Reggae Got Soul" and "Pressure Drop" ,a greatest hits compilation - both with the Maytals - are among my favourite albums, this one almost never gets played.

For me the issue is the production and/or arrangements. The more enjoyable songs are where there's more of a reggae beat, such as "Dreams to Remember" and "Love The Rain". These also have a leaner production; some of the songs are way overproduced, with backing vocals and horn arrangements that just get in the way.

If anyone is new to Toots, the two albums I'd most strongly recommend are "In The Dark" (unavailable at the moment) and "Reggae Got Soul". "Pressure Drop" seems to be a good compilation.

Key word = Maytals. Missing here.
