Too Rye Aye was the commercial high point achieved by this most extraordinary group. It spawned the transatlantic chart-topper "Come On Eileen" and another hit in the exuberant cover of Van Morrison's "Jackie Wilson Said", and certifiable bolts of Kevin Rowland's erratic genius though both of these are, they are probably the least remarkable moments of a consistently bold, expansive, passionate, furious and altogether astonishing album. Two albums into their career, Dexys were dressed like Ukrainian peasants fleeing the eastern front and were pursuing Kevin Rowland's muse armed with violins, banjos, saxophones and what might, in lesser hands, have been a contradictory obsession with soul and celtic folk. The results are incendiary: on cuts like "Let's Make This Precious", "Liars A To E" and "I'll Show You", Rowland reaches genuinely heroic heights which so few others, before or since, have equaled. A certifiable classic, six stars, eleven out of ten and all the rest of it. And the next album, Don't Stand Me Down, was even better. --Andrew Mueller

I recently dug out this old LP which had lain forgotton since the 80's, thought i'd give it a spin - OMG this is such an under rated album - bought the CD next day so I could have clarity/quality of sound. Could be released now (hasnt aged) and the kids would love it - all those who liked and can remember Dexy's - buy it - those that were too young - buy it! Its Superb.

Too Rye Ay is a great,uplifting album.It has soul,ska,irish jiggery stuff...a great pop record.Kevin Rowland is my type of pop star...militant,deluded,passionate and frustrating.Whilst Kev may look like a sinister janitor or a rather dubious looking tube train passenger this guy sings with such conviction,as if every record is his last its hard not to feel his infectious energy.I mean i love Lets Make This Precious,All In All,Jackie Wilson Said and Plan B.Rowland is really using music to transcend,there is a palpable sense of artistic purity.The package is lavish with sleeve notes,a second cd of bbc sessions and live tracks.Whether Rowlands chooses to wear a tutu,your mums nightie it don't matter a fig.I salute you Kevin Rowlands you stubborn,difficult,uber talent.

To change the entire line up of your band & then change musical direction would spell commercial suicide for most bands. Not so for Dexy's.
Although not my personal favourite from the Dexy's collection, it is still a tremendous album full of cracking tunes.
Be it the 'On The Waterfront' look or gypsy chic Dexys Midnight Runners were a truly great band.
