'genuinely funny observations... will make you roar with laughter. (PetFocus )

Product Description

She was particularly taken with the small narrow ledges that ran along either side of the boat. For a cat, four inches is an airport runway – she could dance a Moonwalk along them on her two hind legs, juggling at the same time. Steve has a new member of crew aboard his narrowboat, Justice – but maybe not the kind he’d have wanted if he’d known the trouble she’d cause. Kit, an untidy bundle of fur with all the attitude you would expect from a ‘sarf Lunnun’ cat, joins him on a mission to discover lost parts of England. Steve gets a diff erent perspective on the modern world as he cruises the canals through a landscape unchanged for centuries, visiting picturesque towns and waterway festivals along the way.

A different world! 13 Jun 2011
Format:Paperback
This is a real antidote for anyone who has those workday blues! Our lives are so hustle and bustle these days that we forget there used to be a slower way of life, where one could amble and enjoy rather than just zipping from one place to the next! Fortunately, there are some people who still live life in the slow lane and are proud and Steve is one of them. I really enjoyed seeing the England that exists on either side of the canals and I was nodding all the way along to his observations on modern life.
Kit never lets it get too peaceful though, and I think anyone with pets will know what a delight and a handful they can be. I couldn't help but laugh at her antics, she's a character all on her own. After reading Too Narrow I know what I want to do for my summer holiday!

Having read and enjoyed Steve's previous narrowboat books, I was delighted to see this new addition to the series. It lived up to my expectations, and I think this is my favourite one so far. The presence of the cat, Kit, is wonderful, as it adds a whole new dimension to the storyline, and she is such a lovable character that I would recommend this book to animal lovers just as much as to narrowboat fans. The relationship between Steve, his partner Em and the mischievous Kit is really fun and makes for a really entertaining ride, and Steve's adventures just makes we want to go out and buy my own boat. If you're lucky enough to own a canal boat, this is a perfect summer read to enjoy on deck as the world drifts by; if you're not, it's the perfect escapist read to make you think you do!

In a review of this authors last book, I pondered whether Mr Haywood would acquire a dog. Nope. In his latest he unveils a feline, rather than canine, companion. Having both, I would consider the latter to better suited to the nomadic life traipsing up and down waterways. Cats aren't quite as easy to control in my view. However the side story of the cunning canal-boating cat adds interest to Steve's summer excursion across the middle of England. He visits many canal based festivals this summer. The area he covers could be criss-crossed in a family sedan in a day or two. At 4mph max on the waterways the journey takes on a whole new dimension and perspective. His narrative covers the highs and lows of canal life and the ups and downs of a semi-retired Londoner. Both are quite revealing and honest. He becomes Steve Haywire at times, to the despair of his lovely Em, but he always brought into line with a rebuke or two. Steve doesn't romanticize the narrowboat life. At times it sounds quite miserable. But in a peculiar English way I suspect he enjoys even the miserable bits. Having experienced the canals I can well see how addictive they can become and what a loss to the tapestry of the England countryside should they ever vanish. In his way Steve adds a few valuable threads to that tapestry. Yep, I would recommend this book highly, a humourous easy read. And for other Kiwis contemplating a UK holiday, would also suggest you try a day or two `on the cut'.
