I've read Alice Munro's short stories before and enjoyed them but these are in a different class. She is a wonderful writer with a clear,elegant style and extraordinary psychological understanding. They're absorbing to read and stay in your mind long after you've finished. The stories are quite long - novellas rather than short stories - and I can't imagine anyone not enjoying them. Even people who normally don't like short stories may find they have to change their opinions after reading Too Much Hapiness.

Ms. Munro is a master of the short story, an under appreciated art form for most of the book buying public. Monro's fiction is more true to reality than most non fiction, if that makes sense? Her female characters live and breath and are typically facing the hard realities of life, but no matter how hard life smacks them around these ladies take the hands they are dealt and go on living with a poise and confidence. There is a snappiness to her writing that somehow makes descriptions of the most dreadful circumstances more readable. A dark danger sometimes pervades, survival of the ego on display and that satisfying twist at the end. All this is woven together with an elegance and poignancy that creates one beautiful, beguiling story after another!

If this book were a wine, it would be described as all nose and no body. Enjoyable to cradle in your hand for a while, amusing to savour at the time, but leaving no lasting memory of something new learnt or understood.

I do enjoy Alice Munro and her ability to portray real people in the real world.
