Too many monsters is empowerment for children! 6 Jan 2002
By Kim A. Rees - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Hardcover
James Bernardin's illustrations in "too many monsters" are nothing short of AMAZING! I have never written a review before but I just had to on his work. The illustrations are mystifying! Vibrant and captivating! The expressions on the faces of the characters really do something to you as they leap off the page demanding your full attention. My daughter (age three) stops me from turning the page just so she can stare at the expressions drawn on the characters faces (I KNOW what she's looking at because I'm seeing what she's seeing but I can't put my finger on the magic!) I cannot find the words to express to anyone out there how awesome this book trully is Especially for the younger children. Eve bunting writes very "simply" to the younger reader, a story of a young boy getting tucked in for bed and what happens after that. Magical all across the board this book empowers children in a simple yet brilliantly imaginative way to laugh instead of fear what might lurk in the dark. My daughter has made me read this book five or more times each night and you know what? I myself REALLY ENJOY reading this over and over with her triumphantly celebrating with the characters of this book when its time for this family to take back whats thiers! JAMES BERNARDIN you have outdone yourself! Please include "this" family in another one of your books the expressions are PRICELESS and FULL OF LIFE! I'm buying!

Delightful and not too scary 3 Nov 2003
By Erika Mitchell - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
This book is a fun children's book about the monsters who come out to haunt children in their bedrooms at night. Yes, these monsters frighten the little boy who tells the story, but they're really not all that scary. They have amusing body shapes, along the lines of Monsters, Inc., and instead of saying "Boo", they engage in forbidden activities like sitting on the dresser or playing ball in the house. When faced with this monster problem, the boy seeks the aid of his parents. Together, they discuss the problem and brainstorm a solution. Then they enact the solution together as a team, and the monsters all jump out the window so that the boy can feel safe as he goes back to bed. The pictures are very engaging, and many young children get the giggles upon seeing the monster with the painted toenails. With only one or two sentences per page, the book is a great choice for a short story-hour selection.
Captivating, Fresh & Funny--Good for many, MANY readings!!! 17 Sep 2003

The illustrations and text of this book are amazing!!! Because the illustrations are so expressive and descriptive, the author is able to tell this captivating story with very few memorable sentences per page. My three children (ages 7,5,3) LOVE this story!! It is requested often at our house; I think I enjoy reading it as much as they enjoy hearing it and talking about the illustrations.
The "monsters" in this book are not scarey. The little boy notices them doing things like "bouncing a ball against the wall" and "eating popcorn under the bed". The little boy never expresses fear. He simply states that he notices there are "too many monsters in my room" and goes down stairs to tell his parents about it. I like this non-scarey approach to a normal childhood fear. The family comes up with a great solution to their little problem. I enthusiastically recommend this book!
