Product Description

Product Description
On February 1, 2003, ten astronauts were orbiting the planet. Seven headed back to Earth on the space shuttle Columbia. They never made it. And the three men left behind found themselves too far from home. Chris Jones chronicles the efforts of the beleaguered Mission Control in Houston and Moscow as they work frantically against the clock to bring their men safely back to Earth, ultimately settling on a plan that felt, at best, like a long shot. Yet even amid the danger, the call of space is a siren song, and "Too Far From Home" details beautifully the majesty and mystique of space travel, while reminding us all how perilous it is to soar beyond the sky.

4.0 out of 5 stars A very interesting account of Space Station life., 19 May 2008
This book is about life on the International Space Station for the three Astronauts who were left on there for a long time after the Columbia disaster.

They were left there longer than expected due to the grounding of the Shuttle fleet post Columbia, this meant the due lift back was cancelled and a new way had to be found.

So the book mainly focuses on life for those three Astronauts of Expedition Six(who were Nasa Astronauts Ken Bowersox and Don Pettit and Russian Cosmonaut Nikolai Budarin). They have the loss of friends to deal with as they knew all the crew of Columbia and the uncertainty of when they will come home so lots of emotional stress to deal with. The book talks at how they lived and coped and what they felt about the experience.

The book also talks at length about previous Space Stations such as the short lived American Sky Lab Station and the Russian Salyut and Mir station's, lots of near misses to read about on Mir, on a few occasions total disaster was avoided literally by seconds.

Overall it's a good book, there are not that many about the more recent Space events and this book mainly deals with Space Station stories from Sky Lab, Mir and the ISS which was good to read about as most manned Space flight books tend to be all about Apollo and the 1960's US/Soviet Space race.
