Product Description
When the Cutter family's next-door-neighbours, the Langleys, are gunned down in their house one hot August night, the Cutters' world is turned upside down. That violent death should have come so close to them is shocking enough in suburban Promise Falls, but at least the Cutters can console themselves with the thought that lightning is unlikely to strike twice in the same place. Unless, of course, the killers went to the wrong house At first the idea seems crazy. But gradually we discover that each of the Cutter family has a secret they'd rather keep buried. What was on that old computer teenage Derek and his friend Adam Langley had salvaged? And where is it now? What hold does a local professor and bestselling author have on Eileen Cutter? And what does Jim Cutter know about Mrs Langley that even her husband didn't? To find out who killed the Langleys and why, everybody's secrets are going to have to come out. But the final secret - the secret that could save them or destroy them - is in the one place nobody would ever think of looking...

4.0 out of 5 stars Loved it !, 4 Feb 2009

I was nervous buying this one as I'd loved No Time for Goodbye so much. But it lived up to all my expectations and I read it in a day so I highly recommend it.
The story moves very fast and keeps you guessing right up to the last few chapters - I thought I'd worked it out but how wrong I was! The book has murder, suspense, a lovable main character, a hilarious mayor and a great twist.
I can't tell you too much of the story as I don't want to spoil it - enjoy!

3.0 out of 5 stars very enjoyable page turner (3.5 stars), 2 Mar 2009
By N. Brett (Wiltshire, England) - See all my reviews
(TOP 500 REVIEWER)    (REAL NAME)
It's almost impossible to review this without mentioning Harlan Coben as this could so easily have been written by him, and is sure to be enjoyed by his many fans.
Here we have a family shocked by the murder of their neighbours and, as the plot unravels there is the question that the killers might have got the wrong family and is a hidden secret the cause of it all?
A page turner as we get sucked into a fast moving plot that twists and turns until its conclusion. I have to say that I guessed where it was going which slightly took the edge off it for me, but this is well written and the characters have some depth and are interesting. The town mayor is also an amusing light touch amongst the murder and mystery.
If you liked Barclay's previous novel or you like Coben's stuff, then you should pick this one up...

3.0 out of 5 stars A terrific book, which I could not put down., 7 Feb 2009
By Lizzie Hayes "Lizzie" (Leicestershire) - See all my reviews
Seventeen year old Derek Cutter is friends with Adam Langley. The Langleys live next door - well the next house down the lane. The Langley's are taking off for the weekend, and Derek has just one thing on his mind - making out with his girl friend Penny Tucker. Derek figures if during all the departure commotion he can conceal himself in the Langley's crawlspace, he will have access to an empty house for two whole days in which to entertain Penny. The first part of his plan goes well, but whilst he is congratulating himself the Langley's return unexpectedly, and Derek has to beat a hasty retreat back to the crawlspace to avoid discovery. Hoping they will leave soon as Derek's six foot frame is suffering somewhat in the cramped space, he is dismayed when he hears the door bell - not visitors as well. But the visitor doesn't stay long, just long enough to shoot dead all the Langley's.

Promise Falls is a quiet community - a triple killing is unheard of. And why would anyone kill the Langley's? No reason can be found for these murders. Is it a case of mistaken identity? Knowing of Derek's friendship with Adam, Jim Cutter quizzes his son to find a reason for the killings. Both the boys had an interest in old computers and the only thing Jim elicits is that the boys had recently salvaged an old computer, and that appears to be the only thing missing from the house. Although the police seem to attach little significance to this when Jim informs them. Or most frightening of all - did the killers go to the wrong house?

Jim pursues the missing computer convinced that it may provide a reason for the killings, but as he does so he uncovers a secret, and that in turn leads to more secrets being revealed. There are many twist and turns in this story. But the solution is a surprise. Whilst I had been trying all sorts of scenarios to solve the murders, the story ran off at different angle and caught me unawares.

A terrific book, which I could not put down. So many different possibilities that I had to read it straight through to the end. And what an ending, most unexpected - something along the lines of `No good deed goes unpunished'.

Highly Recommended.

Lizzie Hayes
