Book Description

16 Sep 2010

The bestselling author of MAN AND BOY turns his acute eye and pen to the biggest personal issues that face us – as well as the annoying grit in the eye of everyday life.

In this dazzling collection of essays, Tony Parsons reveals why, long before he became a bestselling novelist, he was an award-winning journalist.

All facets of modern life are captured here - viewed from the sometimes outrageous, often controversial, and wildly entertaining perspective of our outspoken commentator.

Men and women. Straying and staying. The sound of real guns and the fashion for fake breasts. What we should do about gobby yobs, junk sex and performance anxiety. Where cars and football went wrong. The myth of the mid-life crisis. The heartbreak of saying goodbye to your parents. Why Bobby Moore's smile holds the key to the universe. How true love and learning to box can save the modern male.

Life, death and even a bit of breakfast… All of it served up with a side of common sense, lightly-buttered passion and lashings of hilarity.

2.0 out of 5 stars Average, repititve 13 Jan 2012

This is not new material, merely a collection of his newspaper columns. This is stated at the start of the book. I have not read these newspaper columns (but have enjoyed his previous books) so new material to me.

Or was it?

Anyone who has read more than one Tony Parsons book will be familiar with the themes in the book. They are repetitive and gets boring. After about a quarter of the way into the book, chapters become a variation on a similar theme.

Not his best book, not worth buying. Get the feeling that this book was pushed out to top up his royalties.

1.0 out of 5 stars no excuse for such poor grammar 13 Feb 2013

Tony Parsons on Life, Death and Breakfast

It was an OK read and I was expecting a 'blokey' type of book and for that, it was good and the chapter about fake boobs was spot on. Some of the other material was worth reading too. What i hated was the appalling amount of 'buts' and 'ands' that started not just sentences but whole paragraphs. He must have been going for the world record and it ruined the book for me as I was just waiting for a 'but' to start a new paragraph when it should have been in the same sentence separated with a semi-colon. This book needed proof reading. It was poor to allow this. The occasional one is acceptable - what we got here was a joke (was it?!). Glad I got it in a cheap shop.
