Amazon.co.uk Review
Just in case you didn't know, the Tony Hawk's series is the best skateboarding sim ever--and now, with the release of Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 4, it's even more so. As many of you young hipsters may be aware, skateboarding is taken far more seriously nowadays than any child of the 70s could ever imagine, with legions of baggily trousered youths now able to refer to moves such as a bluntside or overcrook with a perfectly straight face. Indeed, the list of silly names for ridiculously dangerous stunts has been increased for this latest sequel and you now have the added ability to skitch (hold onto the back of a moving car) and grind through traffic. The big new change, though, is the career mode, which now has specific goals and milestones for all the different skaters, and really adds to the replayability.

Curiously, the graphics are still not particularly good, with the same slightly muddy, undefined look to them that the developers presumably now think is all part of the fun. They have however thankfully realised that having time limits for the levels was an unnecessary limitation and, except for a few specific missions, you've now got all the time in the world to graze your knees and cave in your skull. Add in a new and improved online mode and you've got everything the discerning extreme sportsman could desire. It is, as the kids on the street apparently say, "sick". --David Jenkins

This review refers to the PS2 version of the game.

Cube Magazine
"Without a doubt the finest extreme sport game ever crafted. Miss it and miss out. 9.2/10."

5.0 out of 5 stars As amazing as it should be, 1 Feb 2003
Tony Hawks. Just the name grasps peoples attention and anyone who thinks that getting to no. 4 now is getting boring is definately STUPID. People who think that do think that because with the first 3 the changes have been a few extra moves and levels etc. but this time it has gone to a whole new place. With only 64 objectives on the last one this time there are a whopping 190 objectives!
And... now instead of having to restart every 2 minutes you can practise for as long as you like until you really want to try an objective. When you do you can skate up to someone with an arrow abov their head and press 'x' and he will give you an objective. At first it may seem easy but thats because the learning curve isn't too steep but the last few objectives are hell to do. Not only do you have to do the objectives, you have to collect ALL the cash icons and find all the gaps to complete the game. Another thing is the skate shop. You can find secret levels skaters (Jango Fett from Star wars) and allsorts of ridiculous clothing. There are 7 levels plus 2 ones you have to buy in the skate shop and there are 16 objectives on each one plus an extra 5 later on. You start trying to get up to 90 objectives and collecting stat points to make your skater better. When you reach 90 you unlock pro challenges for each skater and then unlock another 35 and finish the first ones and so on and so on. The game never seems to end!!!!!!!
The graphics are very crisp and (of course) the best Tony Hawks has seen before.
The levels are giant maybe twice the size of some of the Tony Hawks 3 levels, this game never seems to stop impressing.
This version (Gamecube) is just as impressive as the other formats and I would recommend it to anyone.

This was my first Gamecube game and it hasn't failed to impress me. Trust me!! BUY IT!!!!!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Tony Hawks, or unofficially Life Destroyer..., 27 Nov 2002
If you buy this game, you will be throwing your life away.

You will be late for work, have sleepless nights, lose touch with friends and family. It will destroy your life.

...

But you'll have loadsa fun in the process!!! This game has a strange effect, it acts like a magnet to you, you simply can't put it down!!! Graphics are fantastic, the skating missions in career mode are taxing, annoying, fun and infuriating. You'll find yourself screaming at your skater for falling over and breaking his leg, you'll scream at the screen about how 'unfair' the game is that you can't land a triple twist super mcflicktwist with a revert and manual followed by three kickflips and a pogostick.

Its an amazing game, highly infuriating, highly satisfying when you finally unlock another level or you get your first 10,000 point combo.

As an indication of how addictive this game is, I had two mates round on the weekend. We played it from six in the evening until 2am, whereupon I went to bed because of sheer exhaustion (too many late nights). They carried on playing until... 8 o'clock in the morning, before finally deciding to get a few hours sleep. 11:30 I woke them up, went to make a cup of tea, came back and they were at it again.

Seriously addictive, seriously great, seriously worth your money.

Buy it!! Unless you consider girlfriends, jobs, money & commitments to bear some importance. :D

5.0 out of 5 stars One for the christmas list, 16 Nov 2002
Every single time Activision bring a Tony Hawks game out you know that it is going to be really good. They have never let the public down and this game continues the trend. Tony Hawks 4 is the best in the series. One of the main changes in TH4 is that there is no timer, instead you can 'free ride' it round the whole of the massive level. Your tasks are set by people that you see in the streets and to get around quicker you can hitch a ride on the back of a car. The graphic detail in TH4 is brilliant and so is the gameplay. No doubt about it, TH4 is the best of a brilliant bunch and doesn't fail to impress in every aspect. If you are an extreme sports fan, or even if you're not, this is an essential addition to your collection. Worth your money? Absolutely, the best Tony game yet. Definetley one for the christmas list.

4.0 out of 5 stars Way Harder
This is alot harder than THPS3. I was shocked to see how different it was and how much harder the challenges were. I completed THPS3 quite easily but this took some working.
