Product Description

Product Description

The first UK-born player to be drafted into the NHL and the finest ever to grace these shores, Scottish-born ice hockey legend, Tony Hand MBE tells his story from growing up on a council estate in Edinburgh and playing his first senior game at the tender age of 14 for the Murrayfield Racers to training with the Edmonton Oilers in the NHL and landing the grand slam with the Sheffield Steelers. In his own words, Tony takes you through his life from winning and losing at Wembley to the highs and lows with the GB national team, his clubs and players. Tony has coached Belfast, Dundee Stars (whom he took to a league and play-off double) and Edinburgh and is now with Manchester Phoenix. Find out why he didn't take up Edmonton's offer to stay in the NHL, what really happens on a European tour and why he was banned for taking a cold remedy. Savvy, witty and often controversial, Tony pulls no punches in describing his time in ice hockey and outlining how the sport should move forward.

He has been hooked on ice hockey since 1996, covering the game at all levels including Manchester Phoenix in their inaugural season.

5.0 out of 5 stars A must for any hockey fan, 27 Feb 2007
By Hannah (Doncaster) - See all my reviews
An excellent insight into the life of the UK's best hockey player, from 'rink-rat' kid through to current life as a player-coach. I found the section describing how Tony sees the plays develop on the ice particularly interesting. Recommended reading for any ice hockey fan.

4.0 out of 5 stars A little dissapointed, 14 Jun 2007
By A. O'Brien "Authorette" (Sheffield England) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
I am a Huge Tony Hand fan but I was a little dissapointed with this book. He is a witty man, but it doesn't come across anywhere in the book because he is also very good at keeping his thoughts to himself as well. Maybe he should have waited untill he had really retired and told us a little more. It is all about the hockey - don't expect much of an insight into his life off the ice unless it impacts on his hockey - which is no big surprise really. And it races over some of the tricky stuff he has had to deal with where I would have liked a little more of his point of view, which I, personally, think he could have done without offending anyone. But if you are a British Ice Hockey fan . . . then you have to read this book, don't you!
