Product Description

Synopsis

When veteran politician, Tony Benn, retired from parliament "to devote more time to politics" a career move into the music business was not part of his retirement plan. But now the much loved elder statesman of British politics has teamed up with urban record producer, Charles Bailey - creator of the "Don't shoot", "Don't forget to vote" and Met police rap campaigns - in a unique collaboration that is causing a stir in political and music industry circles. "Tony Benn's Greatest Hits" is a compilation album of memorable speeches delivered by one of the greatest orators of our time, set to music composed by a 21st century maestro. The first track on the album features a powerful speech made during a House of Commons debate on war in Iraq before the start of the bombing campaign in 1998 - laid over an ambient "groove" that mixes elements of jazz, R&B and classical music.

First off let me put my political cards on the table - Basically socialist but I don't agree with everything Tony Benn believes in.

However, whether you agree with his thoughts or not, this CD is fantastic. Benn is a great speaker and the speeches chosen are beautifully made arguments on major historic subjects. Set over what is known as 21st century ambient groove (great smooth lounge lizard music to me) it works brilliantly and is, perhaps surprisingly, something you could listen to over and over.

Essential Listening 7 Oct 2003
Format:Audio CD
I have been a fan of Tony Benn for longer than I care to remember. This compilation is essential listening for everyone who has views or is involved in politics. Over the years, I believe the likes of Tony, Dennis Skinner etc have had a raw deal from the media and some of the general public, who think themselves better than others. Listen to this and you will probably learn a thing or two. Blairites, New Labour and Tories be warned, the intelligent left is gathering momentum!

I've had this CD for years now, and every so often I play it to remind myself of the pure integrity and honesty of our greatest politician (and I'm using that word from the time when it was not an odious comment!).

If you're politics are left of centre, and you admire great oratory and wit, don't miss this CD: Tony's speech about the ordination of women has me in tears (of mirth and admiration) every time I hear it (it's become something of a late-night special for the drunken friends left behind after a social evening!).
