First off let me put my political cards on the table - Basically socialist but I don't agree with everything Tony Benn believes in.
However, whether you agree with his thoughts or not, this CD is fantastic. Benn is a great speaker and the speeches chosen are beautifully made arguments on major historic subjects. Set over what is known as 21st century ambient groove (great smooth lounge lizard music to me) it works brilliantly and is, perhaps surprisingly, something you could listen to over and over.

I've had this CD for years now, and every so often I play it to remind myself of the pure integrity and honesty of our greatest politician (and I'm using that word from the time when it was not an odious comment!).

If you're politics are left of centre, and you admire great oratory and wit, don't miss this CD: Tony's speech about the ordination of women has me in tears (of mirth and admiration) every time I hear it (it's become something of a late-night special for the drunken friends left behind after a social evening!).

I have been a fan of Tony Benn for longer than I care to remember. This compilation is essential listening for everyone who has views or is involved in politics. Over the years, I believe the likes of Tony, Dennis Skinner etc have had a raw deal from the media and some of the general public, who think themselves better than others. Listen to this and you will probably learn a thing or two. Blairites, New Labour and Tories be warned, the intelligent left is gathering momentum!

Whoever thought up the loopy idea of having a piano plonking throughout the speeches. It would have been a fascinating CD otherwise but the plonking at least is a distraction and in my case, being slightly deaf, makes it almost impossible to follow the thread of the speeches. I am looking for a piano-less version.

Tony Benn speaks very lucidly, he is a highly articulate speaker and whatever your political persuasion this is a very interesting CD. The music is terrible and distracts from the quality of the overall experience.

Firstly, I admit that I have heard only one of the speeches on this album: on the occasion of Thatcher's resignation in the House of Commons.
It is a powerful declaration of all that was wrong with thatcherism and the country and is just as valid now as it was then.
But most of all, this is the voice of a man who is utterly sincere in his beliefs and is completely without self-interest, a quality which is probably unique amongst British politicians of today.
If you, like many people, have become totally cynical and turned off by the political games of today's Britain, this is an unequalled reminder of what it _could_ be like when people have the interests of everyone at heart, not just themselves.
