This review is from: Tony Benn Speaking Up in Parliament [VHS] (VHS Tape)
Having seen a few clips of this video on the internet (e.g. 1: Pit Closures & 7: Motion of No Confidence), I thought I'd see if there was more to Mr Benn than his legendary socialist views.
Fortunately, this video proves him to be very similar in his views in parliament to the glib, popular ones he expresses on 'Question time'. Although I don't agree with him on all the issues, it is good to see a man eloquently and passionately illustrating an alternative view with authority and power, in the face of opposition & occasional vicious heckling. Most interesting of all are his views on the ordination of women (4), Arms Sales to Iraq (6) and on Europe (8), as they show insight and moral intuition which convey his views articulately. The way the points are expressed, coupled with the simple, sane and sensible way he puts forth his case, makes you wish for more people like him - politicians guided by principle and not selfish greed. Saying all this, there are two objections I have to this video. On a practical front, I personally enjoyed it as I am politically/oratorically minded. However, if you're not politically inclined, you may find this video a bit dry. And on a more partisan front, I do have a niggling objection that Mr Benn's alternative solutions are not always made clear to complete the sense he makes in his criticisms. If Mr Benn were a genius for real-politik as well as public speaking, then I am positive he would have made a far greater leader than Messr's Wilson & Callaghan combined! Despite these objections, I found this a superb and insightful collection of Mr Benn's parliamentary contributions. Naturally, there is only 60 minutes of material, and 10 speeches, but these represent some of the finest pieces of oratory and clear-minded conviction I have seen in a long time. If only others would be so truthful and skilled in their speaking, then our democracy would truly thrive...
