I have to say I was a little sceptical when I heard about this CD on Classic FM. The history of rock stars dabbling in classical music has not always been a happy experience. However, this set of six pieces from Tony Banks is certainly an exception. To an extent the music is filmic, as you might expect, but there is also a rare melodic invention here - and Paul Englishby's orchestrations are spot-on too. Two of the pieces feature a solo instrument - the sax and violin - and, in their very different ways, are extremely effective. A lot more than just a curiosity corner, but music which bears repeated listening. Highly recommended.
