very good read 28 Feb 2006
By A Fan
Format:Paperback
This book was and is a great companion. Great to delve in and out of on train journeys. Being a fan of short stories I was interested to see how this would measure up to some of the more established anthologies on the market. I'd heard about Tonto and wanted to see if they were as good as the hype I'd recently read in the North East. This book is a treasure chest full of gems. Each story holds its own and all have a certain something which I hope will be a Tonto 'signature'. Having the editors' stories in adds more credibility as it proves they know their craft as writers and publishers. Favourite - 'The Last Smoker'.
I can't wait for the next volume!

This is a very entertaining collection of short stories by new writers, and makes perfect bedtime reading. The stories are varied - some dark, some funny - but I enjoyed all of them for different reasons. Among my favourites, the first story by Stephen Shieber is just brilliantly dark, Robin Marsden's story Nine Lies is superbly crafted and touching, and Adam Maxwell's story about a guy being buried alive is a lot funnier than its premise suggests! The publishers say they set out to find talented new writers for this book, and I think they have succeeded. Unlike some other British short story anthologies, this is worthy but NOT dull. The book reminded me of some of the American anthologies I have enjoyed, like McSweeney's. Certainly if you like Dave Eggers, Michael Chabon, Amy Hempel, or even Raymond Carver, you'll find something to enjoy here. Nicely designed, and it's great value too, with 20 stories for under a tenner. Grab a copy and keep an eye out for these writers in the future...

This is a rare collection of short stories. They all seem to have something to say about life. It's like delving into a goody-bag and not being sure what you will get, when you read them for the first time. I particularly liked two of these stories, "The Good Little Wife" by Stephen Shieber - a chilling little tale and "Bookshelves" by Jolene Hui, which is the complete opposite, a real sweet story. That's not to say the rest of the collection isn't good, it is. If you like short stories, buy this and enjoy!!
