Ralf Hutter of Kraftwerk once made a comment along the lines that electronic music took the work out of musicianship so that all the artist had to worry about was composition. Then Battles came along...musically as complex as, say, Richard D James but with the musicianship to back it up. Sounds like you've never heard before but played on real instruments - although admitedly they do use keyboards and drum machines as well. It's really difficult to categorise this music - probably the closest thing I could compare it to would be Neu! or Cabaret Voltaire (one of the band even looks like an afro-haired version of the Cabs' Stephen Mallinder). It's difficult to fault this CD/DVD package on any level - the DVD in particular is outstanding. The artwork is also worthy of mention - updating Peter Saville's work on Section 25's "From the Hip" - fantastic. Indeed I'm sure that if Battles had existed during the time of Factory records the late and much missed AHW would have been all too keen to sign them.
