There is not one possible reason why you wouldn't want this album. Every single track on it is superb. Let's have a look...

Over the Green Hills is a clever lead-in, very melodic, that makes you aware something great is coming, but the swirling, scorching intro of Worry catches you totally off guard. Walk In My Shadow is a grooving, swaggering track, with Fraser's bass providing the rhythm, and Kossoff's guitar playing a clever lead throughout the song (also later covered by guitar hero Leslie West). Very effective. Wild Indian Woman and I'm a Mover follow suit - driving, grinding. Goin' Down Slow and Moonshine are slower, more traditional blues songs, but still great. Perhaps the best song on the album is their rendition of the Hunter. Koss' guitar is exceptional.

It's funny how the more you listen to something, the more you hear. When I first heard Free, I was captivated by Rodgers' soulful vocals. Then it was Kossoff's expressive, impassioned guitar. With skills like these, it would be easy for Andy Fraser's bass playing to be overshadowed, but not so - he's far too talented for that. It's only now that I've become aware of just how great a drummer Simon Kirke is. I don't know much about drumming, but he's so forceful, and always creating interesting rhythms and fills. Clever fellas.

If you're still reading, stop now, and buy this album!

Tons of talent! 9 Dec 2001
Format:Audio CD
Free's debut album, the blues-soaked "Tons of Sobs," shows that Fraser, Kossoff, Kirke, and Rodgers were right on the money from the start. Fiery originals like "Worry" and "I'm a Mover" jostle with standards such as "Goin' Down Slow" and more sombre material such as the bipartite "Over the Green Hills." This reissued CD features a further eight songs as bonus tracks, including unreleased numbers like "Visions of Hell" and "Guy Stevens Blues" and different versions of tracks like "Moonshine" and "Sweet Tooth." The excellent sound quality on this remastered disc is the icing on the cake, and makes this budget-priced release indispensable.

Raw brilliance 22 Nov 2001
By A Customer
Format:Audio CD
I had the lp from years ago. Once I had this on my cd player the freshness and raw brilliance just came back to me. As if it were only yesterday. A bunch of kids who's love for the blues just shines thru. Paul Rodgers (the best white blues singer ever!), Koss's licks backed by the solid tandem of Kirke and Fraser. A great refreshing breathe of air after all these years!
