Sean Cloud is one of a three-person mission to Earth from the Mars colony, seeking weapons to defend against an approaching alien fleet.

Their preconceptions of a technologically-driven, racialy-tense rat race on Earth give way to an infinitely more sinister reality -- Earth appears to be the craziest, most improbably lunatic place. And yet amidst the madness the Martian colonists must locate and negotiate the arms necessary to save all of humanity.

A very enjoyable book. Jakes turned out a few decent sci-fi stories in his earlier days (such as "The Planet Wizard"), and although the black/white Eastbloc/Westbloc backgrounds in this tale are dated, they don't spoil what is a highly original take on modern society.
