I keeplending this book to friends and they keep refusing to give it back, so I must have bought it about six times. This is a subtle, fascinating book, written with such skill that you believe that Tim Parks has lived through this experience. For those who have lived through the destruction of charismania, this is a healing book. Its the sort of book where the characters stay with you long after you have put it down. Brilliant Stuff.

This is, I think, Parks' first published novel, and it is clearly written, though the plot is plodding and it is a bit hard to identify with such a dysfunctional group of people. He doesn't quite get across the appeal of religious fanaticism perhaps because he takes the part of a neutral observer, a 15-year-old, whose voice, truth be told, is not authentic, and not even particularly insightful. Parks has written a lot of other novels (over a dozen, I believe) and they are well-plotted. This one uses a almost literal)deus ex machina to end the rambling, pretty meaningless story.

Rick, the narrator (an adolescent boy), recounts the effect of religious extremism which takes hold of his family with the exception of his elder, rebel brother. The people are very real, particularly Rick, who comes across warts-and-all and is touchingly honest about his shortcomings. Far from alienating the reader, you empathise with him. Touching and funny.
