Product Description

Amazon.co.uk Review

Dizzee Rascal’s career has been on the rise since it started. After winning the Mercury Prize with his brash debut Boy In Da Corner, the rapper's brand of edgy council-estate rap has increasingly become aware of mainstream tastes, and his fan base has grown wider accordingly. On Tongue N Cheek, Dizzee finally does way with the gnarly 8-bit bleeps of his album Showtime and the swagger of Maths+English to reach fully for the pop crown. Fun, infectious singles "Dance wiv Me"--featuring R&B singer Chrome and disco don Calvin Harris, "Holiday" and "Bonkers" (featuring Armand Van Helden) have all landed high in the UK charts, and are solid indicators of the rest of the album. Slick production, catchy hooks and a mainstream club atmosphere are in abundance here as the rapper delivers a relentlessly upbeat mix of street tales and good, dirty fun on "Road Rage", "Money Money" and the stomping "Dirtee Cash", (which utilises 1990 hip-house smash "Dirty Cash (Money Talks)". While it’s true that a certain amount of Rascal’s former complexity has been sacrificed to achieve this new feel-good sound, he thankfully goes beyond girls, money and video games, delivering constant witty wordplay and talking about politics and the recession on tracks like the Aswad-sampling tune "Can’t Tek No More". Slower jams like "Freaky Freaky" (about having sex on council estate landings) and "Chillin’wiv da Man Dem" (which has a laid-back G funk feel) are there to provide respite but this is unapologetically a party record--and a flippin’ great one at that.

CD Description

Although always the clear leader of the British grime scene, Dizzee Rascal is new to the amount of commercial success he has experienced recently. Two of the songs on 'Tongue n' Cheek' have topped the UK singles chart before the album has even been released, throwing Dizzee into the mainstream consciousness. Accordingly, 'Tongue n' Cheek' moves away from Dizzee's grime roots, embracing pop and dance music, however the razor-sharp lyrical ability and wit remain at the core ofhis sound.

4.0 out of 5 stars Grime & Cheek, 21 Sep 2009
By Toby Staunton "dancing mole" (Derbyshire, England) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
You know you're in for it when an album starts with such a huge club favourite as `Bonkers', and so it is with Dizzee Rascal's 4th album. Mr Rascal was the leader of the British grime scene winning the Mercury Music prize with his debut `Boy in da Corner'. It seems appropriate then that he is the first to graduate to the mainstream so successfully. The opening track, `Dance Wiv Me' and recent single `Holiday' all dropped straight into the No. 1 spot in the charts and yet throughout the album Dizzee's recognisable style holds firm on tracks like `Road Rage', `Freaky Freaky' and `Money, Money'. Pop sensibilities are laced throughout it all and are perfectly balanced. Other than the hugely successful singles further highlights come from `Can't Tek No More' and `Dirtee Cash'. This is a solid album which nicely balances pop influences and Dizzee Rascal's grime roots. It should keep long term and new fans pretty happy.

1.0 out of 5 stars Dizzee, if you see this read it., 26 Sep 2009

I was a big Dizzee fan, I thought this was terrible. He sold out and he has the right to, alot of people do and still sound good at least. Mate what happened to the boy in da corner? Such a strong debut and its eventually come to this, I cant take it, Dizzee you fell off, im glad all the posh kids in private school loved the new singles, and got yourself some number ones but alot of emotion, great lyricism and grimey beats has vanished, its ok though, WILEY is still good.
