Product Description

Still searching for the Holy Grail of guitar sounds? Relax. You've found it.

You probably have few problems in finding your dream guitar (in terms of both looks and playability). But often theres something not quite there in the sound dept.....there's just that 'something' missing.....well here's your answer! Its no great secret that factory fitted pickups are far from perfect, with the same pickup often found in a £200 guitar as that found in a £1000 guitar. And lets face it, a cheap pickup on a good piece of wood won't do any form of justice!

Well....Tonerider have set out to right that wrong for you - with their one aim: to make the worlds finest sounding pickups, priced for the working musician. You get just the classic sound you require, without paying through the nose, teeth and eyes for it! What do you want from your pickups?

  • Balance - they feature a unique Modified Vintage Stagger. This significantly improve string-to-string balance, while still retaining a superb vintage look. All sets are calibrated - meaning they produce an even output, allowing you to work your five-way switch without running to your amp to adjust the volume.
  • High build quality - Forbon bobbins, custom spec Alnico magnets, scattery wound, lightly wax potted and finished off with cloth braided hook-up wire from the same manufacturer that has supplied pickup-makers since the 1950s.
  • Reliability - All Tonerider Pickups are guaranteed to be free from defects in material and workmanship for a period of five years from the date of delivery
  • Tone Guide (Pure Vintage): Classic vintage strat tones, great clarity and a less harsh, full-sounding bridge pickup. This set is for players

Manufacturer's Description

In the 60’s strat pickups changed – they got a bit hotter, the magnet quality improved and started to provide a bit more snap and attack. The Classic Blues set from Tonerider nails these late 60’s tones, whilst also offering the benefits of a calibrated wind for more even volume balance across all five positions. The grey fibreboard flatwork completes the 60’s look. Due to advances in string technology and the wider range of modern guitar necks, the City Limits set uses our unique “Modified Vintage Stagger” polepiece magnet array allowing for near perfect string-to-string balance on the greatest range of instruments possible. The famous “Greybottom” tone, look and feel has never been easier to get!

There are relatively few options for left handers when it comes to retro-fit Strat pickups with staggered pole pieces (and let's face it, staggered pickups make up the bulk of the market!). Fortunately, Tonerider do us lefties proud with this set. I have fitted these to a Japanese 62 reissue, which was a wonderful guitar even with its slightly lacklustre stock ceramic pickups.

Now the Toneriders are fitted, my Strat can realise its full potential. The neck pickup is warm, rich and woody sounding. The middle pickup is clear, articulate and endlessly versatile (already my favourite position on the Strat this is tone heaven for me now), while the bridge pickup finally delivers a Strat bridge tone that I like and want to use a lot. This bridge unit delivers a lot of bite (without any trebly harshness) and can really drive an amp, but if I dig in and play close to the bridge it can also get very close to yielding up a tele-type twang.

As for the 'in-between' tones, these are pure heaven. I was never really a fan of these sounds before, but it turns out I'd only ever been hearing them through inferior pickups. Now I'm a confirmed fan of the out of phase tones!

While these pickups will make you fall in love with the clean and 'just breaking up' tones, they also deal superbly well with all kinds of overdrive and distortion.

I know what Tonerider are getting at by calling these 'Pure Vintage', but don't get the wrong idea: these are almost endlessly versatile pickups. The company blurb goes on about Knopfler, Clapton etc yet there are all sorts of other classic Strat tones served up by these pickups: Rory Gallagher, Hank, John Frusiante, Vini Reilly, Richard Thompson etc.

These are some of the best quality replacement stratocaster pickups I have fitted, for the money they are outstanding value, the construction is to vintage type requirements with fibre bobbins, waxed cloth covered output wires, I have fitted 5 sets of Toneriders to stratocasters I am building or upgrading, the sound is true vintage, powerful without being too shrill, I highly recommend this make of pickups!! These are probably the best kept secret in pickup upgrades!

I bought a set of these for my Tokai Strat after one of the original pickups went down. I had them fitted and within an hour I'd ordered a set for my Fender Strat. These pickups are amazing, just check out the YouTube clip of the guy in the black flatcap! I almost bought a set from a well known British pickup manufacturer, I'm so glad I didn't, to my ears (with 24 years on the road) these are twice the tone, for less than half the cost. All of your classic Strat sounds are there, and they're so warm, even the bridge pickup doesn't have that thin, shrill sound sometimes associated with cheaper pickups. Even my tech can't believe the sound for the money. I can't recommend these pickups highly enough!

I removed a set of texas specials from my strat and put these babies into it.....Big improvement at once much sweeter and snappier not as hot but still great for classic rock blues, also tried duncans prior to the texas specials but these toneriders won by a country mile..specially for the price

Excellent budget pupgrade, I bought the classic blues because the output in these models are all hot for single coils and really create an excellent blues tone. When used with the right distortion or overdrive these pups can deliver a top quality tone. Perfect for rhythm and lead blues, also excellent for cleans and classic rock.

I just customised my Fender US strat and was going to put Seymour Duncan's in, but after reading a few reviews, decided to go for the City Limits instead. These are very versatile pups and give a great tone. Recommended.

I wonder if people might look at the price of these pick ups and then don't buy them as they think they're some kind of budget range and won't be as good as more expensive versions? Think again, they are fantastic value and sound as classy as pick ups costing two or three times the price. I've got them in a Strat and a Tele and could not be more happy with the quality of the sound of both guitars. Look at the star listings at the top of the reviews column - 12 out of 12 reviewers give 5 stars - says it all! I've had dealings with the company in sorting out a technical problem (a misunderstanding by me, not a fault with the products), and they could not have been more helpful and prompt in sorting it out. I don't normally take the time to write reviews, but the service, quality and value from this company are outstanding.
