Tomica City is the new name for Tomy Thomas Motor Road and Rail. Where as once this was based on Thomas the tank engine, in Japan and other countries there has always been a more "serious" version not based on Thomas. They are all great fun but the good thing to remember with this set is that there are 20 years of sales behind it with the Thomas sets. All of the Tomy Thomas Blue track will fit and the modern Trackmaster brown track will also fit with an adapter Tomy Trackmaster to Motor Road and Rail connector 2 pack
All of the old trains will run on this new track and the bridges, stations, tunnels and bridge supports all fit.

Got this for my sons birthday and he loves it. Takes minutes to setup, does not take up huge amounts of space and a great introduction into train sets for my son. There are three carriages, one being the engine compartment, one being the centre carriage and the last being the rear. The train can go round the whole track through a small tunnel and over a crossing, or just loop round a smaller circular track. There are two speed settings, normal and fast. The engine carriage takes one size C battery, so make sure you buy some if you don't already have any.
The short video clip shows the train set running from a close range. It may look bigger than it actually is, but it's relative in size to a "matchbox" size car, so a good size for younger kids.
