I bought this for our 2-year-old, who has recently developed a fascination with Thomas the Tank Engine.
The set comes in a sturdy box and consists of 3 engines, track sections, a station and platform, and a tunnel. All the pieces are robust and well-made, and look likely to stand a lot of handling.
The trains are the pull-back-and-go type, and they go rather well - they will all do 3 complete circuits of the track before coming to a stop. I actually prefer this to the battery-powered type of toy train. With those, not only are you constantly replacing the batteries, but there also isn't much for the child to actually do except watch the train go round and round. With this type of toy, our daughter's attention is constantly engaged, because she has to make the trains go round for herself.
You can have lots of fun with this trying to keep all 3 trains going without stopping or crashing into each other. If you're the gambling type, you can bet on where the train will stop each time. Kids will like it too.
Only 2 mild criticisms. One, you can't buy carriages to hook up to these pull-back-and-go trains, presumably because the mechanism you'd need to move the extra weight would be too costly, or beyond a child's ability to operate, or both. I guess if you want proper trains, pulling tenders and trucks, you'd buy the powered version.
The other minor gripe is that the track supplied only makes one layout, which you can't vary (except of course to make it smaller by not using all the track).
Then again, it is a budget-priced all-in-one set, so you can't have everything. According to the box, it is compatible with the Tomy Motor Road and Rail range, so you can presumably expand the track by buying accessories, and add other trains and stuff later without needing to buy into a whole new system from scratch.
Fun, robust, needs no batteries, doesn't make a noise, and keeps her happy for an hour or more at a time - you really can't ask for more. Very fair value at the price.
