Bought this baby monitor as a replacement for our analogue baby monitor (we were quite annoyed by the signal disturbance), for our now 3,5 months old daughter. It is a great baby monitor, not at least when the price is taken into consideration.

The sound is really good and very clear. The ability to switch between "always-on" (where you hear everything) and "mute" (where it only activates at higher sounds) function is a great function, that we use very often. At some times, you just want to hear everything, at other times (e.g. when she is sleeping outside) you just want to be alarmed when she wants attention :-)

The light signalling sound level a nice function. When the "mute" function is on, the light still shows sound level and it allows you to be alarmed before the monitor turns on the sound. When we are out and about, it is even more useful - e.g. at parties, where the monitor itself can be difficult to hear.

When she sleeps outside, it is nice to have the thermometer function to quickly check the temperature in the trolley. We have actually also used it a lot in the spring period, where the temperature changes from day to day, even inside.

All in all, this is a great monitor compared to the price (~40 pounds) - I would definitely recommend it.

So why not 5 stars? Well, there is still room for improvements. Some small bugs needs to be fixed, to reach a 5-star rating:
    - The sound level is not that high, even with volume set to max.
    - The parent unit uses a specially designed battery pack rather than standard rechargeable AAA batteries. It means that replacements are expensive, and prevents you from using spare batteries at occasions where it is not possible to recharge using a electricity outlet.

Having spent several years with analogue monitors and our last one seeming to suffer big interference, we decided it was finally time to buy a digital monitor. We looked through several reviews and were a bit concerned about reports of volume levels not being adequate, as well as other minor issues. Well, we opted for this unit from Tomy and are very happy with our purchase and wished we had moved to a digital monitor a long time ago. It was so strange going to sleep in total silence and not with the background hiss/hum noise that used to come from the analogue monitor. Regarding other negative comments from other reviewers:

Volume Level: This unit has an adjustable volume level and when set at maximum, it is more than adequate. We can only assume that the other reviewers wished to hear their monitor during a noisy house party, etc...

Baby Monitor Light: We have found that the light on the baby monitor does provide some light into the room but if this is not desired, a simple bit of black tape or similar soon rectifies this.

The parent unit has it's own battery pack, which is not as ideal as those that use standard AA / AAA batteries but when we are relaxing in the evening, the battery life is sufficient and is recharged when the unit is plugged back in when we go to bed.

The unit has a handy two-way communication facility. We thought this might be useful to talk to our baby prior to going up to see her but found it most useful to communicate with each other!

The unit also has a facility to display the baby's room temperature but we find this more of a gimmick as most houses have fairly well balanced central heating systems, so the baby's room will not be that much different to the other rooms in the house.

To sum it all up - a good product.

We bought this product a couple of weeks ago and had it for about 3 days before it drove us mad, and we returned it. It just didn't seem to work. For example, we charged it up as per the instructions, but it somehow turned itself off during the night, even when it was still connected to the mains. So there we were, thinking our little lad had had a good night sleep (as we hadn't heard him), but he could have been crying his eyes out, for all we knew. Even when it was off the mains, and using the so-called 'rechargeable batteries', they lasted for about 10 minutes before it started flashing and then again, turned itself off.

All in all, not impressed which is a shame as we had had a Tomy monitor before. Instead, we purchased the BT 150 monitor, which has been absolutely fantastic!

We have now owned this Tomy baby monitor for 16 months.

Its function is pretty much perfect with good clarity of sound and sensitive pickup.

Its well built too. Robust and no sharp edges from the plastic mouldings.

The night light, thermometer and talk function are excellent, accurate and extremely handy.

I would have scored it a perfect but for two things.

The remote/handset part has begun to "bleep" randomly when off during the day. The only way to stop it is to remove the battery. This brings me to the second and biggest flaw. WHY doesnt this use standard NiMh AAA or AA batteries? Instead it has a chinese made bespoke battery pack that after 6 months began to fail. It barely lasts 2 hours before its bleeping with low battery warning at us. This means the remote has to live with its charger. A small price to pay i guess but its very annoying from such a well thought out product. New battery packs are available but are 1/3 the price of a brand new monitor from Amazon!

All in all an almost perfect monitor but with a design flaw/marketing decision that spoils that perfection.
